Multiple windows open when you start Windows Internet Explorer

I've seen posts where people click on links in a web page and have multiple
IE7 windows open and a KB article referring to the problem after an upgrade
from XP to Vista, but.....

I'm on a brand new laptop - several weeks old - with Vista Home Premium
pre-installed. I've been using IE7 on it without a problem until today.
Whenver I open IE7, I get an infinite number of windows opening - about one
per second. The only way to stop it is rebooting. I've tried some
suggestions found on the web, none of which have solved the problem.
Anti-virus and anti-spyware scans have come back clean although I'm running
some other programs to further check. Any suggestions are greatly
appreciated.

I know of three causes for the vast majority of such problems:
1. Incompatible add-ons: What if you right click the IE icon on the desktop
and choose Start Without Add-ons?
Or go to Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Internet
Explorer (No Add-ons).

2. Tools | Internet Options | Advanced
Scroll to the bottom and click Reset Internet Explorer Settings.

3. Malware already installed on the computer: Help with malware

Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing Messenger Plus, whose ads for
malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince you that you
owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.

Re: Multiple windows open when you start Windows Internet Explorer

Thank you for your response. I ran all the checks for
viruses/anti-spy/malware and came up clean. Per your first suggestion, I
started IE without add-ons (didn't know about this option) and it worked
fine. Now to figure out which add-on caused the problem suddenly.

Thanks again,
Jo

RE: Multiple windows open when you start Windows Internet Explorer

Hi Jo, the same thing was happening with my brand new laptop. I just tried
the no add-on option for IE and we'll see if it happens again...it didn't
happen that often to begin with. Since it's been over a year for you, can
you let me know if it's happened since?
Thanks, Cindy
