| Multiple windows open when you start Windows Internet Explorer 7 I've seen posts where people click on links in a web page and have multiple IE7 windows open and a KB article referring to the problem after an upgrade from XP to Vista, but..... I'm on a brand new laptop - several weeks old - with Vista Home Premium pre-installed. I've been using IE7 on it without a problem until today. Whenver I open IE7, I get an infinite number of windows opening - about one per second. The only way to stop it is rebooting. I've tried some suggestions found on the web, none of which have solved the problem. Anti-virus and anti-spyware scans have come back clean although I'm running some other programs to further check. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. |

| Re: Multiple windows open when you start Windows Internet Explorer 7 Hi, You may have an incompatible browser add-on. See: http://www.enhanceie.com/ie/troubleshoot.asp for troubleshooting information. The troublesome program may not show up as an add-on. Disable other security, privacy, ad-blocking, appearance tweaking programs to see if one of them is causing the problem. Any program that interacts with Internet Explorer could be causing this. The connection with IE may not be obvious, such as Google Desktop. A firewall will probably not be causing this problem, but be sure to turn on the Windows Firewall from Control Panel> Windows Firewall before disabling a third-party firewall or security suite during testing. - - - Does this happen if you startup in Safe Mode? Windows Vista Help- Start your computer in safe mode: http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...904a11033.mspx (Shortened) http://snipr.com/1nwvi If not, a startup program (possibly an unnecessary program) is causing the problem. Go to Start> Run> (type in) msconfig> Startup tab to see what's listed. - - - Or this may be a malware problem- adware, spyware, hijacker, trojan, etc. See these sites for help: The Parasite Fight http://www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm If unsuccessful with the standard fixes, be sure to follow through with a HijackThis log. | RE: Multiple windows open when you start Windows Internet Explorer 7 Try both of the following: 1) Start>Run>Type in iexplore.exe –extoff Does the issue persist? 2) If it does persist, try browser reset - Tools>Internet Options>Advanced Tab>Reset Button -- Gistcheckin "Jo" wrote: > I've seen posts where people click on links in a web page and have multiple > IE7 windows open and a KB article referring to the problem after an upgrade > from XP to Vista, but..... > > I'm on a brand new laptop - several weeks old - with Vista Home Premium > pre-installed. | RE: Multiple windows open when you start Windows Internet Explorer Thanks for all the responses. The problem did happen in safe mode as well. I came up clean after deep scanning for viruses & spy/malware. I took the suggestion of starting IE without add-ons first and it worked fine. Seems to also have fixed the problem with Adobe Reader that started just before the multi window problem - I installed Reader 8 and every time I'd open IE7 Adobe would pop up a message that it "could not open the file" before I even tried opening anything and when I did try would give me another message and not open the file. Thanks again for the help. Jo |

| RE: Multiple windows open when you start Windows Internet Explorer Thanks for the info, Jo. When you started without add-ons, did you re-enable them one by one to determine the conflicting control? In addition: Look in C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files Click on View and select Details Are there any listed as damaged or have a black shield with Yellow Exclamation Mark in the middle? If so, right click on them and remove them. Reboot your system. -- Gistcheckin "Jo" wrote: > Thanks for all the responses. | RE: Multiple windows open when you start Windows Internet Explorer I haven't had the time to try to figure it out. As long as IE will open just once now, I'm happy. I'll play with the rest when time allows. But thank you for all your help. I did check the Downloaded Program Files as you suggested - the only thing in there is the java runtime environment and there are no messages or black icons showing.
