IE7 freezes up in XP

I have been using IE7 with no problems for several months on Vista. But now
I am trying to use it on XP, and it is a different experience.

Recently, when I start IE7, it locks up after it appears on the screen.
Nothing can be typed on it, and no menus can be accessed. It has a blank
start page.

After I added msn.com as the start page using the desktop IE shortcut
Properties, IE7 would freeze halfway through loading the page.

Does anybody know I can fix this?

Cheers

ss.

RE: IE7 freezes up in XP

Related? After 5 months of no problems, IE7 on Vista Ultimate now hangs
when launched. It appears to connect to any page - as the bottom status bar
flys by: "redirecting to site x"; "website found x"; "start downloading x")
but doesn't complete the process (bottom middle bar never gets filled green).
It hangs with an empty white "page box" and the menus don't work.

If I right-click IE7 icon, "Run as Administrator", everything works fine
even tho I have admin privelege. From this successful launch, turning off
add-ins, "delete browsing history" restore defaults doesn't help. And, other
User logins have no problems.

I'll keep digging but if anyone has a clue, thanks in advance.

RE: IE7 freezes up in XP

Have you tried using no Add-ons mode? Right click on IE desktop icon and
select start without add-ons?

Have you tried a browser reset? Tools>Internet Options>Advanced Tab>reset
button.

May help!

That almosts certainly means that there is a registry problem with your
account, of that some Internet Option you have selected is causing this.

What you need to do is find out how you can reset all the settings to
default.

Re: IE7 freezes up in XP

I am writing this in Firefox 2.0. I have done everything that is listed on
this post.

Google would not let my default search tool be changed off of google (this
was during the reset).

my machine is windows xp.

explorer 7.0 with no addons will open without giving me the fatal error
message but then as soon as I browse to any site it crashes.

Also if I start it in standard mode it immediately locks up.

Have you tried uninstalling the Google toolbar in Add/Remove programs?

Re: IE7 freezes up in XP

I have now removed the google toolbar for internet explorer and run the reset
again. I have also rebooted the box again with no change.

The i.e. no addons still crashes as soon as I browse to any other site.

Re: IE7 freezes up in XP

You may have a horked (dirty; bad; flawed) install of IE7. I suggest that
you..,

1. Uninstall IE7 (which automatically returns you to IE6) per
http://www.ie-vista.com/kbase2.html

2. Uninstall all toolbars and third-party Windows Themes (including Window
Blinds).

3. Reinstall IE7 per http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install,
and using http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/default.mspx as the
installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update.

Do a thorough check for malware, following all of the steps at one of these

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing Messenger Plus, whose ads for
malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince you that you
owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
