IE7 has suddenly stopped working correctly... doesn't work at all.

I've had IE7 (on Windows XP) on my computer for some time now, and this has
never happened before. It just won't work at all.

I was using it yesterday with no problems. I haven't installed anything
recently and I did a spyware/virus scan and nothing came up. Here are the
problems:

- When I open IE7 up (to a blank page), it loads fine. But the search bar
doesn't work, the address bar doesn't work, and clicking a link in the
Favorites Center doesn't lead anywhere. When I type something in the address
bar or the search bar, it just won't do anything. I can't even open documents
on my computer with IE7. Nothing loads.

- I can't right-click on the IE7 icon and hit "Start without Add-ons". When
I try to, it doesn't load properly and freezes and remains unusable. Not even
the 'Internet Explorer 7 is running with no add-ons" information bar pops
out. I have to CTRL-ALT-DEL to close it.

Since I haven't installed anything recently, and I apparently have no
spyware/viruses, I can't figure out how to fix it. If anyone knows a fix or
possible solution, I'd appreciate it.

Does the problem persist if you Reset IE7 Settings (RIES)?

Re: IE7 has suddenly stopped working correctly... doesn't work at

It didn't work. I did reset IE7 (using the instructions on that webpage) but
when I restarted it, it remained in the position before. The address and
search bars are still unusable and I still can't open IE7 without add-ons
without freezing.

Re: IE7 has suddenly stopped working correctly... doesn't work at

You may have a horked (dirty; bad; flawed) install of IE7. I suggest that
you..,

1. Uninstall IE7 (which automatically returns you to IE6) per
http://www.ie-vista.com/kbase2.html

2. Uninstall all toolbars and third-party Windows Themes (including Window
Blinds).

3a. If the behavior persists, post back to this thread for additional
suggestions. Do NOT reinstall IE7 at this point.

3b. If the behavior does NOT persist in IE6, reinstall IE7 per
http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install, and using
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/default.mspx as the installation
source, not Automatic/Windows Update.

Do a more thorough check for malware, following all of the steps at one of
these Web pages.
Help with malware:
All MS-MVP Sites.

Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing Messenger Plus, whose ads for
malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince you that you
owe it to the author. See also:
http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=27971
Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.

Re: IE7 has suddenly stopped working correctly... doesn't work at

PA Bear: Thank you, that worked. I followed your instructions and IE7 is
working perfectly now. I don't know what caused it to mess up but it's fine
now.

Frank: I did do more searches for malware but the only things that ever came
up were "tracking cookies." But the links are helpful, so thanks for those.

Both: Thanks for the help (and helpful links).
