IE7 Won't Sort By Names

My IE7 will not sort by names all of my favorites.
Any ideas?

Are you clicking in the drop-down list from the star?

Re: IE7 Won't Sort By Names

Yes. One of the menu items says "Sort by Name".
My understanding is that it will sort my favorites.

Re: IE7 Won't Sort By Names

When I right click a favorite in the list from the star and choose "Sort by
Name" it does just that, with the folders above the individual favorites. I
take it this is not what is happening for you. Are some getting sorted and
not others?

Re: IE7 Won't Sort By Names

I only have one thing out of order which is the new favorite that I added.
I've never used the feature before so I can't really answer that question.

Re: IE7 Won't Sort By Names

When you sort by name it alphabetizes what is already there and any new ones
get added to the bottom. They remain there until you sort again.

Re: IE7 Won't Sort By Names

Yes I have the new item at the bottom and want to sort it into place but it
stays there.

This could be yet another example of the consequences of using
security apps which try to protect you from malware by changing
the permissions of registry keys.

Unfortunately, even starting in safe mode, e.g. without such security apps
running, would probably not help because the registry keys would still be
left unwritable. I'm not even sure whether uninstalling them undoes the
changes they make.

FWIW what I would do is run RegMon filtering on fav and check to see
if updates to the Order values under the Favorites subkey are being blocked.

BTW I'm not sure whether that write gets done as soon as you try to sort
the list or even whether the list gets reshown after you have sorted it.
I would recycle IE (close all instances of iexplore.exe) first before deciding
that the sort command hadn't done anything.

Re: IE7 Won't Sort By Names

Yes I've done the recycling but it made no difference. I did notice a few
days later that the sort is okay.
Not sure if it has something to do with a reboot or not. Certainly would
not make sense... but who knows.
