Favorites URL's keep disappearing

Seems to happen randomly and with Favorites I may not have used recently or
use all the time, but on a regular basis, I will click on a favorite and
nothing will happen. When I check its Properties, the URL field is always
blank. I can add again the URL detail or delete the Favorite and add from
viewed page as new, it seems to still reoccur.

Anyone have any ideas?

Have you scanned for spyware recently?

Yes, using OneCare, both on a scheduled and frequently done manual scan.

One Care isn't all that good.
Do a thorough check for malware, following all of the steps at one of these
Web pages.
Help with malware:
All MS-MVP Sites.

Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing Messenger Plus, whose ads for
malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince you that you
owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.

Re: Favorites URL's keep disappearing

HAve scanned with Adaware and Spybot referenced in the links all coming back
with nothing. Am quite paranoid and carefull about site visited, links
opened, and such. Find hard to believe with 3 of the better know pkgs saying
nothing found, anything is there, but that is why asking if anyone else has
heard of or expeirenced.

Re: Favorites URL's keep disappearing

OneCare, Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D are three of the weakest performing
anti-spyware applications. And the latter two don't check for viruses.

Make sure that you are using the latest version of IE7.
This symptom was much more commonly reported before IE7 RTM.

Which AV are you using? Certain AV has been suspected of causing
this symptom. Is there any way of telling an AV to ignore changes in
a particular directory? If so, as a test, tell it to ignore changes to
%USERPROFILE%\Favorites

A related procedural change that some users have tried with varying results
is marking their Favorites *.URL files Read-Only.

If it occurs fairly frequently, to refine your symptom description what I would do
is run FileMon filtering on fav and highlighting WRITE. Then, if nothing else,
you would get a clearer idea of when it was happening and if it was being done
by some process other than IE you would also know how.
