Interpreting the crash "address" as ASCII yields: CfdT
It could be a coincidence but I suspect it represents stack corruption.
Depending on the byte order it was stored by it may be seen
as a permutation of those letters elsewhere in a dump. Etc.

Usually we guess that this is a symptom of interference by third-party
programs and with IE7 suggest that you try running first with No Add-ons
e.g. Run... iexplore.exe -nohome -extoff and see if closing that
causes the symptom. Then try being selective about which Add-ons
you leave enabled in order to figure out which one might be the problem
cause. Etc.

Good luck

Re: Solution to update problem

Robin and Robert, Thank you, thank you. Disabling the addons in the manner
you noted did fix the error when closing IE7. I am not sure what was
disabled, because when I go into Tools>Manage Addons now I do not see
anything disabled that I had not already disabled, and so far the ones I
normally use seem to work.

Robin, after fixing the IE7 closing error and following your method, I
installed KB927891-v3-x86-ENU.exe which appeared to install fine. Next I
followed your examples for installing the MU update. This did not work. I
still get the same error. I did not try installing it via safe mode yet, but
will give it a try tonight after work. I will let you know how that goes.

Again, thank you both for your time. I relish not having that error box show
up every time I close IE7 !

Re: Solution to update problem

Okay, well after submitting the last post I closed IE7... and got the closing
error again. After some trial and error, it appears it is coming from
Roboform, after I use the fill forms to sign in here. As noted previously,
even though I disabled addons via run, the ones I normally use still appeared
to be active including Roboform. Now, I have disabled them via IE7's
tools>manage addons, and for the moment I am not getting the closing error.
What is interesting is that the Roboform fill still is working, and I use it
to sign in.

I guess I will see what happens after I post this message...

Nope, even though the closing error went away again even after signing in, it
came back yet again when I posted the last message, and all the Roboforn
addons are still showing disabled. What is it about posting a message that
would change thngs?

Maybe Roboform is not actually the culprit - try disabling some of the other
add-ons.

When you disable/enable add-ons, this does not actually take effect until
the next time you close and re-launch IE.

Re: Solution to update problem

Robin, I finally had time to try installing the Windowsupdate agent via Safe
Mode. I almost thought it was going to work, until I received the following
error:

Install failed. Error 0x8007043C

According ot another post in this forum, it means:

"ERROR_NOT_SAFEBOOT_SERVICE. Translation: You need a service which is not
available in safe mode."

Also, I tried disabling all of the non-Microsoft addons, but still got the
memory error when closing IE7. What happens if I disable all of the addons
listed in IE7 ? I do not want to kill it and have to reinstall it if I
disable something that is required, though I am starting to wonder if that
may end up being what needs to be done anyway.

Thanks again.

OK, so you will have to install it in normal mode. Before doing it, try
executing

net stop wuauserv

at a command prompt window, then run the UpdateAgent installer.

See <http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737/> to reset IE7 settings to
defaults. This will disable add-ons, which you can re-instate one by one to
check whether the problem re-appears.

If the problem with IE7 persists, there might be something wrong with your
PC installation beyond the remit of the Windows Update support forum. You
might try some standard fixes such as running

sfc /scannow

and have your Windows installation CD handy.

Robin, I followed your last suggestion on the IE7 closing issue, and so far
it seems to have worked. I will know for sure after I post this message and
close IE. If it works, I will compare which addons are disabled now and
before doing the reset, and then enable the ones I use individually until the
problem comes back.

I will try your last suggestion on installing the Windowsupdate agent
tomorrow night if I have time.

I appreciate the way you have hung in there with me, and the many others I
see you helping on the forum.

Re: Solution to update problem

Well, that was a quick let down. After posting the last message, I closed
IE7 and once again received the closing error.

What is the sfc/scannow that you referred to in your last post?

Open a command prompt window and type the command:

sfc /scannow

Have your XP installation CD ready. This command re-instates any missing XP
files.

If you are using XP, you can also try uninstalling IE7 (in control panel Add
or Remove Programs) and then download and install a fresh copy.

This is just a test message to see if completely uninstalling all of the IE7
addons that I had solves the closing issue before do the sfc scan or
reinstalling IE7.

Re: Solution to update problem

Robin,

Well, apparently the problem had something to do with one of several addons
or programs I had installed related to IE7. after the last message failed
yet again, I went though and uninstalled AM-Deadlink, IE Spell, Inline
Search, Snipit, Bloglines plugin, and Roboform. At this point my closing
issue seems to have left, and for chuckles I tried installing the Wu Update
file again. It gave me a message that it was already installed, so I di as
you suggested sometime earlier and did a force install, and it worked. So, it
would appear that whichever addon or program that was messing up closing IE
also must have had something to do with stopping the Wu update from
installing.. I guess anyway.

After I make sure I do not have a problem closing IE after posting this
message, I will try reinstalling the addons one at a time and see if the
closing problem comes back. Maybe one of them had gotten corrupted.

Thank you for the time and effort you put into this.
