KB931768 causes IE7 failure w/ navcancl & ieframe.dll &temp soluti

I have been running Internet Explorer 7.0 on Windows Vista for several
months and it was working fine. But today I just installed the "Security
Update for Windows Internet Explorer 7 (KB931768)" and that caused IE7 to
stop working.

After I installed the update and restarted Windows, IE7 will no longer
start. Now when I double-click the icon or run iexplore.exe, the web browser
window flashes quickly on the screen and then disappears. Then this error
message dialog box appears.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
File Download - Security Warning
Do you want to save this file?
Name: navcancl
Type: Unknown File Type, 2.64KB
From: ieframe.dll
Save Cancel
----------------------------------------------------------------------

temporarily, I have three ways to fix it:
1. retore Vista or uninstall the patch
2. run IE as Administrator ( which, as a matter of fact, disable the
protection mode)
3. in IE Options->Securities->disable Protection Mode.

It is Windows Vista Ultimate Edition.

RE: KB931768 causes IE7 failure w/ navcancl & ieframe.dll &temp so

I have no add-ons and toolbars installed.
BTW. People say ,in XP & Win2003, reinstalling IE7 can fix this problem. But
I cannot do this, 'cause I am using Vista Ultimate. There is no corresponding
IE7 Download for Vista, supplied by MS.

I have the same problem here - an uninstall of KB931768 seems to have
resolved the problem.

I'm having the same problem with the Update but I'm using XP pro. I can't
use IE7 at all much less check to see if there is a new update.

See 'Known issues with this security update > Controls that prompt before
they are loaded' section of http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931768

1. Try opening IE in No Add-ons mode & see if this behavior persists. If it
doesn't, change your IE home page to "blank" then close IE7 and reopen
normally (i.e., with all Add-ons enabled) and see if the behavior returns.

2. If still no joy, reopen in No Add-ons mode, reset IE settings
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737), close IE, open normally and see if
the behavior still persists.

This is all related to a cross-site security vulnerability addressed by
MS07-027/KB931768: http://secunia.com/advisories/24535/

Also try this fix, courtesy of MVP Robert Aldwinckle:

Start > Run > Type or copy/paste the following into the box:

iexplore.exe -nohome -extoff

Re: KB931768 causes IE7 failure w/ navcancl & ieframe.dll &temp soluti

This "navcancl" with IE7 issue does not appear to be an addin or
installation issue. I don't know what the conflict is and why some
computers misbehave and others don't but I can replicate the issue
100% simply by toggling Phishing Filter on and off.

I was having the same issue even with the home page set to
about:blank
and all addons disabled using the "Internet Explorer (No Addons)"
shortcut from the System Tools under Accessories. When I used the
"iexplore.exe -nohome -extoff" extensions, IE7 would open but as
soon as I went anywhere, even www.google.com, I'd get the dreaded
Navcancl message. Disabling Phishing Filter rectified all issues.
However, I have many users here who do not have the problem with the
update installed and Phishing Filter enabled.

Temporary Solution...

1. Start IE7 using Start->Run iexplore.exe -nohome -extoff
2. Right click on the toolbar area and tick Menu Bar if its disabled
2. Tools->Options->Advanced->Security->Disable Phishing Filter

I tried with no luck a complete reinstall of IE7 followed by
reinstalling Microsoft Update 91768 but the update broke it again.

Follow-up: Right-click the Cancelled message > Select Properties > Write

Also see if disabling Phishing Filter makes any difference (Tools > Internet

Re: KB931768 causes IE7 failure w/ navcancl & ieframe.dll &temp so

You know what, since I set about:blank as my default homepage, I can
guarantee you this is nothing to do with the URL. As a matter of fact, of
this issue there is no chance for you to perform your follow-up. The main IE7
window is just like a quick flash, it poped up and closed at once, then left
a popup window showing some info like the following( it's just like you are
trying to download some unknown filetype thing):
> >>> ----------------------------------------------------------------------
> >>> File Download - Security Warning
> >>> Do you want to save this file?
> >>> Name: navcancl

> >>> From: ieframe.dll

> >>> ----------------------------------------------------------------------

PS. either disabling Phishing Filter really or disable protection mode does
help. But any way it compromises the browser's security, isn't it.

What we'd like to know is if it's being caused by

res://ieframe/navcancl.htm

Normally when you use the -nohome switch and click the Stop button
that shows up in the Address bar.

E.g. Run... (press Win-R and enter:)

iexplore.exe -nohome -extoff

and click the Stop button. What happens?

Well you could at least open the TIF Viewer using Internet Options
(e.g. from the Control Panel) to see what is listed last in the view sorted by
Last Accessed...

If this is for XP with default TIF location you could also just open
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

Or open the History...

Hmm... that's interesting. Navcancl doesn't show in the History viewer
but it does show in the TIF viewer. Who knew? <eg>

Good luck

Problem solved!

I've solved this problem by restoring the temporary internet files folder
the default folder. I changed the TIF folder for some reasons, but now I
have to chage it back to solve this problem. The default folder in Vista
should be like:
