(Adding) search engines (IE7)

The page* which provides the possibility to add search engines to IE7, would
be a lot better if it would:

1a Require the user to provide a URL for a query for TEST TEST
This will allow IE7 to extract the correct character(s) used to join a
multi-word query on a particular site.

IE7 currently adds a + by default. At Wikipedia, for example, this produces
an invalid query as Wikipedia articles (and searches) are joined by an _.
(Not http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet+Explorer, but
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Explorer)

1b Provide ability to adjust these join-character(s) manually.

Re: (Adding) search engines (IE7)

Hi rz,

The Wikipedia site is different (as are some other php sites). The correct
search url is
http:///www.wikipedia.org/search-redirect.php?search={searchTerms}

not

http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/{searchTerms}

You can find a full listing on my site that you can add to IE7 (or 6 as
search urls) at
http://www.iecustomizer.com/?url=ies...Provider=*wiki

Regards.

Re: (Adding) search engines (IE7)

Thanks for the link Rob. It does provide a work-around, but in my opinion IE7
should anticipate irregular strings. It's better to allow a user to add what
-he or she- wants. Users decide what's the right way, not MS.

Re: (Adding) search engines (IE7)

Hi rzr,

Its the way Wiki are processing the request query strings,, they seem to be
redirecting the results page and you end up with a different query string to
what you have entered in the search query form. If you go to their search
page and have a look at the source for their search page you can see the
structure of the search form query string.

I have only encountered one other site (php) that is using the same method
to process a search query.

Regards.
