Sorting of Favorites

Using IE7 with Win XP Home.

Every time I add a Favorite, it is appended to the end of that folder list
and I have to R click and Sort by Name to get the list into alpha order. Is
there some way (Registry hack?) to make alpha order the default order, so
that IE always sorts the list in that order and I don't have to do it
manually?

Have you tried closing the browser first and then reopening it instead?

The unsorted order is stored in a registry value called Order.
So unless you see that value changing as a result of your use of the dialog
I think the unsorted order would simply be transitory. However, if it is getting
stored I suppose another thing that you could try would be to protect its
registry key with permissions or simply have an automated process which
deleted that value as frequently as you found necessary. Etc.

Good luck

Re: Sorting of Favorites

Thanks for your contribution, Robert, but I'm afraid I don't follow.

If I close the browser (without having sorted the favorites list to which
I've just added a favorite), when it is reopened, the list is still in the
same order, ie, it has not been sorted into alpha order.

Where is the Registry key 'Order'? I don't understand the rest of your
second para, but perhaps I will when I find that key.

You will have seen that MVP PA Bear does not think that it can be done so,
if you've found a way, I'll be delighted.

I'm really surprised that it is not an option within IE, as I would have
thought that many people would find it useful.

Re: Sorting of Favorites

I have the opposite problem. Perhaps we should trade computers. With Vista
Home Premium, IE7 will not remember my sort order, instead arranging my
favorites in alpha order, despite my efforts to the contrary (so apparently
alpha order without user intervention is a possibility). Why this is I
don't know. No matter how I arrange my folders or links within the
Favorites pane by dragging and dropping, IE will only allow that arrangement
for the current session. Closing and re-opening IE shows the favorites back
in alpha order, with folders at the top. I'd prefer my own arrangement.

Re: Sorting of Favorites

@dean-dean: One or more options/settings in an ever-growing number of
third-party applications may be disallowing the change(s) from "sticking".
These include but are not limited to Ad-aware's Ad-Watch, Spybot Tea Timer,
SpywareBlaster, SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor, Norton AntiVirus, McAfee
VirusScan and/or Antispyware, and Zone Alarm (Free and Pro).
