Installation problem

I uninstalled IE 7, and then tried to install it again. When I finished, it
told me it could not finish reinstalling. It gave me a link to try to
troubleshoot it. It gave me four things to try, but nothing worked. Any
ideas?

Re: Installation problem

Sandi's installation tips looks as though it should be titled "Install if
you dare!". Unless one is a techie, it all becomes gobbledegook, IMO. Is
there a version for novices to be able to follow and install safely? Life
is complicated enough.

Re: Installation problem

Hi Brett:

The steps that Sandi has kindly reproduced are pretty much standard
procedure for upgrading your operating system. There's actually even
more to it than that, if you're being really careful. You would do
pretty much the same thing if you were installing a service pack or any
other substantial upgrade to Windows. Once you've been working with
computers for a while these steps become almost second nature.

To put it another way: It takes a lot of time and effort to make good
chicken soup. But the results are definitely worth it. Here too.

Re: Installation problem

Perhaps installing/uninstalling in Safe Mode, rebooting twice (into Windows)
after each action? (This would mean downloading & saving the installer, vs
"running" it.)

Upgrading IE is a /major/ system upgrade: You don't want anything running in
the background that might interfere with the changes being made. Upgrading
to IE6 SP1 in Win9x needed to be handled the same way.

Well, I've followed the tips to the letter, followed all the steps in
the MS KB pages, tried installing in safe mode, and it all comes to
nothing: IE7 will not install on my laptop. I've managed to install
it without any problems on my desktop and my daughters laptop, which
is much older and less capable than mine.

It goes through all the install steps, then at the very end says it
failed and I have to reboot to remove it. The IE7 log always ends up
something like this:
>

quote
124.359: DoInstallation: Installing assemblies with source root path:
g:\bff86e7e08dad631375e43db8cea2dc7\
124.359: Num Ticks for Copying files : 30656

ProductInstall.GlobalRegistryChanges.Install error: 0x5
135.156: INF_REGISTRY Failed
135.156: DoInstallation:DoRegistryUpdates failed
135.391: Access is denied.
135.391: Internet Explorer 7 installation did not complete.

Select 'OK' to undo the changes that have been made.
135.391: Starting process: C:\WINDOWS\ie7\spuninst\spuninst.exe /~ -q
-z
222.328: Software Update Rollback has completed with return code
0xbc2. This rollback requires a reboot.
222.328: Internet Explorer 7 installation did not complete.

Internet Explorer 7 has been partially updated and may not work
properly.
222.328: Update.exe extended error code = 0x5
unquote

Does anyone have any idea on what might be wrong and how I might be
able to install IE7? In the meantime, i'm using Firefox 2.003 for my
tabbed browsing. Perhaps I should stay with it?

Or does Microsoft refuse to install IE7 if you have Firefox and
Thunderbird installed?

TIA

What anti-virus, firewall and anti-spyware programs are you using?

Re: Installation problem

It looks like some application is disallowing the necessary Registry changes
to be made (e.g., anti-virus/anti-spyware application; third-party
firewall).

Free phone support for IE7 is available through Nov-07. You might want to
call:

Avast! V4.7 Home, Windows and Spybot Search & Destroy V1.4

But both Avast and Spybot have been turned off when I attempt to
install IE7, and even trying to install in Safe Mode with network
support made no difference. Will I actually need to uninstall these
programs to get IE7 to install? I hope not!

Since I posted initially, I have installed Windows Defender OK but IE7
still refuses to install.

I have also used subinad.exe and a cmd file to reset all the
permissions as follows:
quote:

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f
/grant=system=f

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f
/grant=system=f

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f
/grant=system=f

subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f
/grant=system=f

subinacl /subdirectories %windir%\*.* /grant=administrators=f
/grant=system=f

unquote

But after running that, IE7 install failed in exactly the same manner
as before: ie, it goes through the whole install process, then at the
end says it failed and needs to reboot to uninstall IE7 and revert.

I've also gone through all the steps in the MS IE7 troubleshooting
page, and found none of the troublesome keys listed.

I'm stumped!

I wouldn't think so, but some program has blocked the required Registry
