RE: IE7 in Windows Vista does NOT open media player content

I have this exact same problem. I did NOT have this problem when I was
running IE 7 with Windows XP Home.

Any answers other than changing the protection mode (because that doesn't
work for me)

RE: IE7 in Windows Vista does NOT open media player content

Hi Laurie,

I finally figured it out. You have to hold the "Ctrl" key as you click on
the link and then it will open. I'm totally surprised the techs couldn't give
that as a solution to the problem.
Hope this helps you too.

Re: IE7 in Windows Vista does NOT open media player content

Hi! The same problem was for me. I searched tons of site and all Micosoft
Knowledge base (of course no solution there).

This is ths way I solved this. Open the "Programs by default" utility (in
your start menu, also accessbile fro MSIE settings) and then open there the
lowest option, my Vista is not english so I guess it english this option
sounds like "Settins access to programs by default". There are 3 schemes
(Microsoft, non-Microsoft and Other). Choose Other and set it for yourself
but when setting Media Playes choose that Windows Media Player is your
player by default.

For me after this the problem was solved.

RE: IE7 in Windows Vista does NOT open media player content

Hey Elissa
I'm finally at the office to test out the "ctrl +click" solution. Sadly it
does not work for me. All I get is a new tab that cannot display the page. :(

Will keep trying.

Hey, thanks! I was having the same problem, only with .wmv files and your
solution worked like a charm.

Re: IE7 in Windows Vista does NOT open media player content

hi Alexander

That works! Thank you.

Here are clearer English instructions:

Click Start and go to Default Programs
Then, select Set Program Access and Computer Default
Click Continue
Then choose a configuration - select Custom (click the double arrow beside
Custom). Scroll down the list and under choose a default media player, select
Windows Media Player.
Then click OK.
