| IE7 application error when closing I get an IEXPLORE.EXE - Application Error when I close IE7. Then it states "The instruction at "0x66869bc7" referenced memory 0x0000001c" The memory could not be "read". It only happens when I close IE7. What could be the problem and how can I fix it? |

I know of two causes for the vast majority of such problems: 1. Incompatible add-ons: What if you right click the IE icon on the desktop and choose Start Without Add-ons? Or go to Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Internet Explorer (No Add-ons). 2. Malware already installed on the computer: Help with malware All MS-MVP Sites. http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm http://aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/...moving_Malware http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/darnit.html http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/Malware_Defence.htm Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827315 So How Did I Get Infected Anyway? For quite a few people it's by installing Messenger Plus, whose ads for malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince you that you owe it to the author. | Re: IE7 application error when closing Thanks for the help. I believe I have narrowed the problem to the IE7 add-ons. I do not get the error when I run IE7 without add-ons. However this does limit what you can do over the internet. Is there away of finding out which add-on is causing the problem or do I just have to take turns disabling the add-ons to see if that fixes it? Thanks. The only way I know is to disable all and then turn them on one at a time until you find the culprit. -- Frank Saunders, MS-MVP OE/WM http://www.fjsmjs.com Answer in newsgroup. If you make the assumption that you are trying to find one, independent one you can use an intelligent partitioning procedure to eliminate most of the individual tests. E.g. use a view which shows all the add-ons which are known to IE (not just currently loaded) and sort it by Publisher. Then guess that some criterion in that ordering can be used to select a set of add-ons which probably all can be loaded at the same time without causing the problem symptom--e.g. perhaps use Microsoft as a first cut, etc. Then disable all the others and test that combination. The point is that if you have a test which reliably reproduces the symptom and it doesn't occur when you test with that combination of add-ons, you're done testing all of those (given the above assumption of trying to find one, independent culprit.) So then you have reduced the problem to finding the culprit in the remaining set of disabled modules which in turn could be partitioned using a different criterion and then that set can be tested with the same hopeful expectation that if the symptom can not be reproduced with it you have thus avoided having to test each of its members separately too. Eventually you may reach a point where you don't even care if the add-ons which remain disabled are tested, in which case you have achieved the objective of eliminating the symptom and being able to use most of you add-ons without testing any particular add-on specifically. Etc. HTH Robert Aldwinckle --- |
