| IE7 - The Address is not valid or Explorer Cannot Display Page Ok, this is a bit frustrating, but does anyone have any new ideas on how to get IE7 to access pages. I have had this problem with some sites since I downloaded and redownloaded IE7. I cannot access some sites. I have followed all of the suggestions about reinstalling and/or clearing options and still nothing. The strange thing is that it works fine on my wifes computer. What can I compare between systems to see what is different and how to get rid of this. One site for example is Monster.com. I keep getting the error on my system but not on hers. Anyone have any ideas of where I can look and possibly change?? |

| RE: IE7 - The Address is not valid or Explorer Cannot Display Page Have you tried installing the User Agent String Utility? You'll find the download link under question 4. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/pro...a&mg_id=20316b -- Gistcheckin "Ken" wrote: > I forgot to mention that I am Windows XP (Home) version. > > "Ken" wrote: > > > Ok, this is a bit frustrating, but does anyone have any new ideas on how to > > get IE7 to access pages. | RE: IE7 - The Address is not valid or Explorer Cannot Display Page Yes, and that did not work either. I've run all the checks for ISP connectivity and clearing cache and temp files...all the norm stuff. So onward I search for the answer. | RE: IE7 - The Address is not valid or Explorer Cannot Display Page Try this: 1. Open Internet Explorer, click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options. Click the Advanced tab, and scroll down to the Security section. Find and clear the Use SSL 2.0 check box. Check Use SSL 3.0 Click OK. 2. If you are on a network that uses a proxy server, and you notice slowness or a problem connecting to websites after upgrading to Internet Explorer 7, it might be due to web proxy auto-detection problems. To fix these problems, follow these steps: Open Internet Explorer, click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options. Click the Connections tab. Under Local Area Networks (LAN) settings, click the LAN Settings button. Clear the Automatically detect settings check box. Click the Use a proxy server for your LAN check box. Type the address and port of your proxy server. Click OK twice. You will now be able to navigate to Internet sites. 3. If you notice a problem connecting to websites, it might be because the upgrade to Internet Explorer 7 changed your Internet connection settings from what they were set at in Internet Explorer 6. To work around the problem, follow these steps: Open Internet Explorer, click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options. Click the Connections tab. Click the first entry in the Dialup and Virtual Private Networks list, and then click Settings. Select the Automatically detect settings check box, and then click OK. Repeat the previous two steps for each entry in the Dialup and Virtual Private Networks list. Click the Lan Settings button in the Connections tab, and repeat steps 4-6. Click OK on the Connections tab. Close Internet Explorer, and then restart it. -- Gistcheckin "Ken" wrote: > Yes, and that did not work either. Alternatively, find out if it is just IE which has the problem. E.g. use a different browser or simulate an HTTP connection using telnet 80. Etc. > and > how to get rid of this. One site for example is Monster.com. I keep getting > the error on my system but not on hers. Anyone have any ideas of where I can > look and possibly change?? That site does an immediate redirect so why not use the real URL to start with? http://www.monster.com/ Further the original server isn't even the same IP address so if you were pinging monster.com that would have been proving nothing (not that pinging proves much about HTTP connectivity.) <nslookup> Non-authoritative answer: Name: a860.gf.akamai.net Addresses: 216.58.96.38, 216.58.96.40 Aliases: www.monster.com, www.monster.com.edgesuite.net </nslookup> Now we see that the redirected server is an alias for a caching server. XP's dnscache seems not to cache the canonical name for such a lookup unless you ping it as well. So, if you need to improve your lookup it might help to either ping -n 1 the canonical name or add an overriding lookup entry for the alias name you need in your HOSTS file. In fact, when I test the first idea using ipconfig /displaydns it appears that if you want to use the ping -n 1 trick you will have to be quick about getting IE doing its lookups: <displaydns> a860.gf.akamai.net ---------------------------------------- Record Name . . . . . : a860.gf.akamai.net Record Type . . . . . : 1 Time To Live . . . . : 12 Data Length . . . . . : 4 Section . . . . . . . : Answer A (Host) Record . . . : 216.58.96.38 </displaydns> Note the "Time To Live": that's 12 seconds and I did the displaydns as quickly as I could after the ping -n 1.
