Refresh Page

Using BBC News as Home Page. When I open IE7 the page opens with the
page set to the last time it was closed. In Internet Option it is
set to automatic check for new copy so why do I need to manually
refresh?

TIA

Does this only happen with "BBC News" set as the home page? Try setting
"about:blank" as home page and adding "BBC News" to favourites. Open IE7,
then go to "BBC News" from the favourites menu. If this fixes it, it has to
do with the setting of "BBC News" as home page, not with the general
settings of IE7. I would ask "BBC News" technical assistance for help next,
or try resetting "BBC News" as home page from scratch. You could also set
the browser to delete all "Temporary Internet Files" upon exit. In this way,
the reload would be forced upon your next visit. Unfortunately, this would
also delete all of your cookies as well, which could be unacceptable.

"Automatic" is frequently a non-useful setting. Try "Every visit ...".

Re: Refresh Page

Frank

""Automatic" worked OK in XP. I changed it to before "Every visit"
before I saw your post to see what difference it made.

Could a security setting be involved? That aspect of Internet Explorer
and the Windows Firewall always mystifies me <G>!

Which Refresh do you need to do? E.g. F5 or Ctrl-F5?

If the latter, the problem is with the site or an intermediate caching server.
BTW Ctrl-F5 should also be sufficient to avoid Alan's worry about
deleting your TIF but deleting your TIF wouldn't affect any Cookies
in any case. ; )

If you only have to do F5, then Frank's suggestion applies
(e.g. cache-checking option set to Every visit versus Automatically)
but I suspect that you will find that that proper checking (at least for
the main HTML page) is already happening and something else
is going on to cause your symptom.

In either case, if you have FiddlerTool running you can see exactly
what the differences are for each step. If you need more help try
refinining your symptom description in terms of the differences
you see in the HTTP requests and responses you see that way.

Good luck

Automatic may seem okay for you, but with that setting OE makes its own
decision about whether or not to check for page updates. AFAIK they have
never shared the algorithm it uses and others have had problems with it on
WinXP IE6, me included.

Re: Refresh Page

Well Frank for some reason it must revert to more than one store at
times. Normally it has been for a page earlier in the day but I have
seen one for several days previously. It is definitely more likely to
happen in Vista than XP!

The page it is happening with is my Home Page BBC News. It keeps
coming up in Vista as 15 March! The setting is every visit!

Mouse selecting View, Refresh, which is equivalent to F5? I looked
at the Fiddler Tool. It's too complicated for the likes of me <G>!

Yes, at least in the case of normal pages.
In the case of pages created by frames I think you can refresh
just the frame you click in and in that case F5 refreshes the
whole frameset--at least that's the way View Source works
in that case so I suspect Refresh could work that way too.

> I looked at the Fiddler Tool. It's too complicated for the likes of me <G>!

Well, it's really not that complicated to install or turn on.
Once it's turned on just let your curiosity be your guide.
E.g. you would be easily able to confirm whether my speculation/
recollection about right-click Refresh of a frame... ; )

Good luck

Robert

Hmm.
I guess I don't know.
