Strange problem with IE7 on a wireless Gateway notebook running Vista...

My network setup is:
-4200 Speedstream ADSL Modem (windstream.net)
(into a)
-Linksys WRT54G
(with the following attached)
-[Wired] Desktop running XP {No signs of problems}
-[Wireless] Notebook Running Vista Home Premium {problems}


My Problem is:

In IE7 on my wireless Vista notebook I'm having a huge delay (only with some
websties) in what seems to be a response back from the server of some of the
websites I'm trying to go to. Most pages load quick like normal, but some
sites hang right after you click it, and it sits there saying "Connecting..."
then after a few minutes the page eventually loads (never timing out). this
problem is very consistant, the sites that load normally always load normally
and those that load slow always load slow, painfully slow.

There seems to be no page-weight issue because several "heavy" pages load
just fine most of the time. It really seems like some kind of scripting
problem and not a DSL speed issue because my desktop doesn't have this delay
problem. I have tried just about everything to resolve this problem but I
just can't get it. Please Help

http://www.msn.com (Loads very Fast)
http://www.lexmark.com (Loads Very, Very Slow, at lease 3 minutes or more)

Even http://192.168.1.1 the router pages load extremely slow (3+ minutes per
page) and they are local files... what is going on here?

I'm using Macafee virus suite and have tested most of the setting in it and
Internet Explorer 7 and have had no change in results. Is it some kind of
firewall setting somewhere? I've tried shutting everything off with no effect.

I do not have this problem on The (wired)XP machine w/ IE7

I'll commiserate and add some data for others. I'm experiencing exactly what
you are, except with different sites -- my worst site is www.fedex.com, which
takes several minutes with IE7 on Vista and never completely loads, and never
times out. The problem seems to be in downloading page items which must not
be prevalent in other pages. I have IE7 on 2 XP machines and have no problems
with the same pages. The IE7 version is 7.0.5730.11 on the XP machines. The
IE7 version on the Vista machine is 7.0.6000.16386. Out of frustration I
installed Firefox on the Vista machine and have no problems with the pages
that won't come up on IE7. I've tried to compare the advanced settings
between my XP and Vista machines, but the dialogs have changed so much
between these two versions -- which you would think would not be the case! --
that comparison is almost impossible. Like yourself, I've turned on and off
everything I could find in McAfee, firewallls, and IE7 options -- with no
success. At this point, I'm just going to use Firefox. BTW -- the Vista
machine is wired, one XP desktop is wired, and my XP laptop is wireless.
There's no performance difference and no problems with the 2 XP machines.

I think as a last resort I'm going to install Firefox. I've had absolutely no
resolutions to this problem from anyone from my ISP to Microsoft. Several
people on forums like this have been very kind in suggesting things to try
but every time I get the same disappointing result.

It very well could be the settings of my network and all the adapters and
stuff. All I know is; I just bought this cool new T5200/2g ram. laptop for my
wife and it does nothing frustrate her to no end.

I'm having exactly the same problem with a brand new Dell Dimension
running Vista Ultimate that arrived yesterday! I also installed
Firefox2 and it experiences the same delays on the same websites as
IE7 - and it seems to be MOST websites!

The Dell came with McAfee Security Suite and I'm wondering whether un-
installing this and switching off as much security as possible will
help or not?!

My Sony laptop with XP and IE7 wired into the same router has none of
these symtoms.

OK - figured it out... hopefully it'll work for you guys too...

Go to McAfee Security Center / Configure / Internet & Network... and
disable the Phising Protection! (leaving Firewall and Personal Info
still on).

All now perfecto again!

Last post on the matter from me! To get rid of the warning that pops
up to tell you you're not protected after you've switched off the
Phising Protection - you need to go to McAfee Security Center /
Configure / Protection Status / Advanced / Ignored Problems... and put
a tick next to the "Phising filter is turned off" box.

Just another data point which may help others -- all my McAfee settings are
(and have been) exactly as venus365 describes. Still -- IE7 doesn't load
pages, but Firefox does. The primary differences between my 2 XP machines
that load perfectly and my Vista machine that doesn't are: the XP machines
have Norton rather than McAfee; and the IE7 versions are slightly different,
as described before. The most apparent IE7 difference is the "enable
protected mode" checkbox in the Vista IE7 version under internet
options/security, but turning that on and off had no effect. Intution says it
may have something to do with McAfee, but there are so many changes between
IE7 versions, that IE7 is also suspicious.

Disable the virus protection and try again.

Once you're satisfied that Macaffee is the culprit, ditch it (and Norton)
and get a virus-protector that doesn't hog resources or interfere with your
computing.

AVG is good (and free). There are others.

I just join the club, I have the same problem.

I have been struggling with the exact same problem. I took the advice
mentioned in this thread and uninstalled McAfee. INSTANT SUCCESS!!!! I
don't know why McAfee caused the internet to respond to random pages this
way, but I'm glad I could fix it.

Now I'm off to find a new anti-virus program that won't effect browsing on
the internet.

FINALLY -- I blew away McAfee and all my performance problems went away! All
pages load immediately. I played for days with every configuration and
ultimately had everything I could find turned off, but nothing helped. When I
finally un-installed the whole thing out of frustration, everything started
working. I've always had good luck with Norton and am sorry that McAfee came
with my new system.

Ok, it sounds like McAfee is the main culprit.

Now the question is; I have the full blown purchased McAfee program
installed and running on my XP Desktop and I have the 3 month McAfee version
that came with the Vista notebook. Do I remove McAffe from the notebook or
both machines? (only the Vista notebook has the problem)

Yes, I've had problems accessing one particular website (www.ii.co.uk). I've had problems with McAfee before so I took your advice & got rid of it.
I installed AVG instead (I used to use AntiVir but, unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a version around that's compatible with Vista) -
And surprise, surprise the website was accessed no problem at all.

At least this time I didn't pay anything for McAfee - It came with the Dell package!
