Power Option Properties

Not really sure what category this comes under but anyways...

I've always wondered, what's the difference with hibernate and standby? And in the options there's also turn off hard disks... May I know the difference between these 3 and which is most recommended? Which one of these will disrupt programs and which will still run them while maintaining as low as possible power consumption/noise?

Thanks ppls!
