Hey gang,

Good to see there is a Win 7 newsgroup now.

I have been gathering components for a new X-58 / I7 build, have everything
but Windows 7 and a new hard drive, which I am about to pull the trigger on.
I am contemplating getting either Windows 7 Premium, in either the upgrade
version, or the OEM version, and am just trying to decide which version to
place my order for. There is not a lot of difference pricewise between the
two on NewEgg, so price between the two is not a big factor.

First, I think Home Premium will be fine for me, I will not be using any
file encryption, and as far as having the XP mode available , well I have XP
Pro now in a dual boot with Vista Ultimate 64 bit ( full version ), and I
have not booted into XP in many months, so don't think I would need having
the XP- Mode available to me.
I will be installing the 64 bit version of whichever one I decide on.
I will also be doing a clean install on a new hard drive with whichever one
I get.

Here is what I am thinking:

OEM Version - I like the fact it will be a full version, and do not have to
worry with having an activated copy of either my XP Pro or Vista Ultimate
already installed anytime I want to do a clean install.
I realize I would not get MS support, but have not used that in many years,
usually can find answers on either web forums or these newsgroups.
The only downside I see - I do tend to change hardware fairly regular, may
change cpu and/or vid card in a year, and motherboard again probably in a
couple of years. This may cause some aggravation, but seems like from what I
have read a phone call to MS if necessary usually resolves it by getting a
new activation code...

Upgrade Version - I know there would be no issue when changing hardware,
but then " officially " , would have a copy of either my XP Pro or Vista
Ultimate installed and activated. But, from what I have read, " unofficially
", there are ways around this to do a clean install using the upgrade
version without having to have a previously installed activated copy of an
OS. But then, I suppose, at some point MS could do something that would
change the way to unofficially get around that?.

Anyway that is what I am thinking, would sure appreciate any feedback from
others before I do pull the trigger on ordering Windows 7.

Thanks,

Hi all,

We have a small LAN with a few XP Pro PC's. They all can see each other and
sharing files is a piece of cake. Now we have bought a new laptop with
Windows 7 Home Premium. We also connected an AP to the LAN. Setting up an
internet connection from the W7 laptop was easy. But somehow the laptop
can't see the other PC's and vice versa. Pinging works fine. I managed on
the laptop to give the network group the proper name. I also managed to
install LLTD on one of the XP machines. Now this machine shows up in the
laptops network overview but I can't do anything with that. In My
computer/network the LAN does not show up and neither do the other PC's. The
laptop is invisable from the other PC's as well.
I never expected this new Microsoft product would be so crap. How can I
arrange that the laptop can see the other PC's and vice versa?

All network setting seem right. I removed the laptop from the home group as
this only works with other W7 machines.

Thanks in advance for your help.

With kind regards,
You can tell it to display certain folders - not all your garbage - have you
done that?
> I have two W7 issues involving screen saver. I use the "photos" option to
> show pictures I keep in a folder named "slideshow".
>
> 1) I use an external monitor to provide additional display geography. It
> sits to the right and higher than the PC's monitor. My pictures are
> truncated at the top, apparently using the height of the external monitor,
> but showing the slide show on the PC's screen, that is lower.
>
> 2) Vista and earlier used only pictures in the folder I specified. W7 is
> apparently looking around for other pictures, so is also showing pictures
> that are in other folders. Fortunately I don't have dirty pictures, but
> it
> shows pictures that I randomly took with my digital camera and felt no
> need
> to edit or delete. So dumb pictures of houses, people, etc. are included.
> Bummer.
>
> I hope Microsoft corrects these problems, They aren't show stoppers, but
> sure are annoying. TIA, Paul
> dual-channel ram. Since I upgraded to Win7 will this machine recognize

Are you using a 32bit version or 64bit version? Any 32 bit OS will only
use 4gb at any one time. The MS consumer offerings are limited to 4gb -
no matter what. Some MS server systems and Linux 32 bit systems can
utilize PAE to access up to 64gb - but each process is still limited to
4gb.

So what are you doing that you think you need more than that?
If Vista was on the first partition, with Win 7 on the second
partition, the boot files would be on the Vista partition. If
you wiped that partition, Vista, and the Win 7 boot files are
gone. Use the Win 7 DVD to repair the Win 7 boot. To boot
from the DVD, make sure the DVD drive is the first item in
the BIOS boot order.
build 7100.

I toyed around with power settings and all sorts of things. Logs were no
help because I would come into the room, after telling it to shut down some
time ago and find that the monitor was off and it was stuck at the point
JUST after it clears the screen's icons and before it shows the Windows 7
blue screen (not BSOD) and the Shutting Down business. So, I had to hit the
reset button or alternatively just hold the power button in to force a
hardware shutdown.

I don't know if this answer will work for all of you but it cleared my
problem. I have had Spybot Search and Destroy installed on it for some time
with no trouble but all this started happening after an update. So, I
uninstalled Spybot and all is going fine now. I cannot say if it was a fault
with spybot but it may well be, since that update. If you are having
shutdown problems and have Spybot installed then uninstall it and see what
happens for you. Easy enough to install again.
>>>> >> From the deepest recalls of my memory, the cheap-o power strips
>>>> >> deteriorate over time. It's not like you can buy one and it will
>>>> >> last forever.
>>>> >>
>>>> >> Someone please correct me if I'm wrong!?!
>>>> >
>>>> >
>>>> > "Cheap-o power strips" are essentially nothing more than fancy
>>>> > extension cords. They provide next to no protection and there's
>>>> > very little there to deteriorate.
>>>>
>>>>
>>>> Ken,
>>>>
>>>> I have a "PowerWedge" surge protector for my home theater. Almost
>>>> the size of two cinder blocks with 3 sections of four outlets with
>>>> fuses for each section.
>>>>
>>>> I've happily watched monster movies on the monster 10' screen at
>>>> monster volume in the midst of monster thunderstorms without
>>>> incident.
>>>>
>>>> I wouldn't trust the cheap-o strips for that! ;)
>>>
>>>
>>> I'm not familiar with the PowerWedge, but it sounds better than the
>>> cheap ones.
>>>
>>> Let me just add one comment however. If a lightning strike hits your
>>> power line nearby, no surge protector or UPS really provides
>>> protection. The thousands of volts in a lightning strike can jump
>>> over gaps and go right through these devices to reach the thing you
>>> are trying to protect. That's why the best protection against nearby
>>> lightening storms is unplugging.
>>
>> I agree 100%. We had some top-of-the-line surge protectors on our 3
>> CAD stations when our business first opened here, and there was a
>> direct strike on the pole about 1/4 mile away. All 3 surge protectors
>> blew up like there was dynamite inside, and 2 of the 3 CAD stations
>> were toast. I don't know what saved the 3rd one, but I ended up
>> replacing 2 fried daughter boards to bring it back online.
>>
>> SC Tom
>
>
> We call that improper grounding.

Guess we would have had to sue the power company- it was their contractors
that wired the building.
>
> Agent 8.0?? They only just released v6. Are you talking about Agent
> from www.forteinc.com?

As I said and apologized for (yesterday, I think), 8.0 was a typo for
6.0.
> Has anyone else here come across the right click problem in Win 7?
> When i right click on a folder there is a delay of approx 5 seconds
> before the right click menu appears. On larger files - eg those
> containing dvd files the delay can be nearly 20 seconds before a
> menu appears. I wonder what can be done to sort this out?
