Dell laptop battery won't charge

Something was dropped onto my Inspiron 2650 and crashed the hard drive.
Hard drive data is unrecoverable, so I gambled and put in a new HD. It
seems to be working ok, and the laptop seems to be ok. However, the battery
will not charge. There is a charge indication on the screen, but it changes
to "running on AC"
There is also an X across the battery icon in the battery meter window. Is
there some software I need to load or do you think the shock did something
to the charging system or battery. I loaded all the software that I have
thinking it may be a driver on one of the set up discs, but that didn't
correct the problem. Do you think a new battery will fix it?
Thanks for your advice
JD
