need help! bought used dell d400 laptop but no OS

I bought a dell D400 laptop for my son for christmas off of ebay. We were
trying to hurry up and read over everything before the auction ended, and we
missed the "small print" that said that there was no OS installed. I have
window 98 full version on a CD, but there is no interal CD-ROM installed on
this laptop. I have a desktop computer. Is there a way I can connect my
laptop to the other computer and load the OS, or can I buy an external
CD-ROM without the OS being on there and will it work? I don't know alot
about the inner workings of a computer, so if anyone has any suggestions I
would appreciate it.

Re: need help! bought used dell d400 laptop but no OS

Thank you. I already have a cd-rom/dvd . I bought an interal one for this
model, but the guy I bought it from says that this model is not equiped for
interal optical drives. So my question is; how do I get an OS loaded onto
the hard drive? If I buy an external CD-Rom will I be able to install it
without an OS?

I guess I don't understand then. If you have a CD-ROM drive for the
laptop what is the issue? In order to properly load the OS these days
you are going to either need windows 98 on floppy or the CD-ROM
drive that is intended for the laptop. XP does not come on floppies. The
link I sent you has the factory CD-ROM drive for your laptop which will
make it possible for you to load any version of OS you may desire.

Cheers!

Cheers!

Re: need help! bought used dell d400 laptop but no OS

My question is: How do I get the OS loaded onto my computer? There is NO
interal CD-Rom. This model only uses external. If I buy an external Cd-rom
can i install it without the OS already loaded on the computer?

Depending on the interface between the laptop and the included external
drive you may be able to boot directly from the cdrom. The key to this
will be going into the laptop cmos settings and see if it offers that as one
of the boot options. Assuming it does then give it a whirl. It may or may
not boot. Otherwise your only choice is to make a dos boot disk with
drivers for the cdrom and go from there. I have a great idea...why don't
you just call Dell and ask them if the laptop is able to do this or not.
They
will be more than happy to give you at least that answer and may have other
solutions that may make you very happy.

Cheers!
