startup

Yesterday I ran windows update because it was on the taskbar saying updates
ready. It reset and came back to system disk error and has been dead ever
since. It won't let me run the system recovery or it won't boot to my
recovery cd's I made when I first bought the computer either. What the heck
happened? I tried following the online help from Compaq but got nowhere. I
reset the bios defaults made sure the HDD was showing now the online help
says to replace the hard drive. It was good yesterday AM until I updated
Windows, does this make sense? I don't have another full copy of XP to try
and boot to but mine worked about 6 months ago when I restored the system.
Any direction here would be great, I'm lost and about ready to throw it in
the pile of junk.
Thanks
Greg

Compaq Presario
Win XP 2000mhz
512 Ram
1 year old system.

Re: startup

Is the drive noisy?
Try running a scan on the drive, most HDD manufacturers have scanning
software for their drives. check their website for the utility
Windows update will not normally cause a drive to fail, it's usually a
faulty drive or BIOS problem (cant say it's impossible though)
After a format reload though, the update is no longer a factor
Your restore disk is an image file not the actual OS and it should have the
option to reload or format and reload, choose the latter, if it still wont
boot then suspect the drive...warranty?

Re: startup

I learned a year ago never to use the window update icon on the task bar,
after a virus used the same icon to trash my computer. Fortunately my
computer was still under warrantee, and I was able to get it reimaged, but
McAfee was asleep on the job instead of scanning for viruses, so they got
"fired" on the spot
I always go to the start, all programs, windows update. It's saved me a lot
of headaches.
