HP Pavillion Booting Up Issues

Talked with HP about this, and they want me to return the tower. Not
sure about this. Almost one year old, under 3-year warrenty though.
The computer will come on, but the monitor goes to sleep. Or, the
computer will just go off by itself. Or, the monitor will go to sleep
but I can't turn off the tower.
Sometimes at power-up the fan is LOUD. Goes to boot mode, I select
"start Windows normally," I get the desktop, but then the monitor goes
to sleep.
Anybody had luck with returning to HP? Turnaround time? Do they reset
to factory settinge? Will I lose everything? HP says it's an
electrical problem; can I do anyting myself to fix it??
