problems with OptiPlex gx1 drives not found

Hi,
i have been trying to use this old dell machine as a router. I removed
motherboard, power supply and some other thing and put them into new
chasis. it is a 500MHz pentium3 with 128MB of ram. the computer was
runnig with 80GB seagate HDD and winxp installed (not an original
har/software config) without problems before i tookcare of it. i
replaced hdd to a 40GB seagate, later with 6GB maxtor, and even 2 GB
WD.
the problem is that even if BIOS recognizes Maxtor (at least its
volume, cycls etc) it says at startup that primary/secondary 1 and 2
drives not found. worse, it does not recognize cdrom (8x TEAC RW). i
have reseted everything i coul, i was looking into BIOS settings, and
updated BIOS version with no luck. maxotr was the only drive it could
recognize in BIOS.
what is interesting is that after saying drive not found press f1 to
cont f2 to enter setup, after i quit setup, it loads windows 98
previously installed on maxtor drive (i installed it on fat using
diferent machine)
also once it gave me some plug and play errors after startup

somebody told me that maybe installing windows xp would sort things out
(in this case installation from hdd only)

if you have any ideas, how to fix it, plese help me
nixon

Re: problems with OptiPlex gx1 drives not found

It sounds to me like you are trying to install from a Dell restoration CD or
something like that. They are designed for original configuration only as it
is only an image file not the complete OS. Try installing using a full
version of the OS and if need be contact Microsoft for the code on XP and
explain the situation to the tech. They will give it to you if your
situation is legit.
