DVD Rom won't read CD-R's

I'm at my wits end and don't know what to do to fix this problem. My
dvd rom is a mat****a SR-8584A. It will read all other cd's fine like
music, software, cd's with ebooks, etc. But when it comes to any cd's
with recorded material on it it won't read it.
When I put the cd in the orange light comes on and I can hear it
spinning but when I click on the D: drive to access what's on the cd it
keeps saying D: not accessible, retry or cancel.
I've cleaned it, nothing. This particular cd has read the data in it
before. I thought perhaps the cd got corrupted or something but then
after restarting my computer I was able to access the data on the cd
but when I had to shut my computer down and put the cd back in it won't
read again.
Does anyone have an explanation as to why it's doing this and how to
correct it? It has firmware version n13F and is on a gateway computer.
The computer is getting pretty old and I figure about time for a new
one but everything else works fine so far.
Gateway said it could be not enough memory but I have almost nothing
running at startup except a firewall which I disabled to see if it made
a difference. It didn't.
I want to fix it but not start messing with it too much since it does
read all the other cd's fine.
Anyway, any info on this problem. Anyone else with it? And what did you
do to fix it? Thanks.

Re: DVD Rom won't read CD-R's

I once had an issue similar to this on a customer's laptop. Turned out that
the drive in question used different lasers/sensors/etc to read CDs than it
did DVDs. However, this drive read DVDs of all types, but no CDs at all.

See if there is a firmware update available for the drive. IF there is, use
it and see if that corrects the problem. Also check your cables, maybe
change them to be safe. You may also want to research for issues with the
drive and your motherboard.

Some drives won't read a cd-rw that has
been made on another pc. Make sure that's not the problem in this case.

D S is right, and I didn't even think about that. If you're using Nero on
one machine and Roxio on another, chances are they won't get along too well.

Eric and DS have answered most of this question so I'll just add my
little bit...

Make sure the CD-R is finalized .. some writing software leaves the disc
open, which really isn't a problem for CD-RW/R Drives but can be for
"normal" DVD/CD rom drives.

It could also be the type of dye used in the CD-R .. try a different
brand of CD-R, if its yourself that's making the disc's.
