Win 98SE Boot problem

Normal boot attempt gets message
(NAV Auto-Protect)
Unable to initialze the virus scanning engine database files.

System will boot in safe mode, did run msconfig, unchecked
anything similar to Norton and Autozone, however when attempt made to boot
normally again get the same message again as
shown above.

Any ideas or further help would be greatly appreciate. Do not
have restore disk and attempt to make one from safe mode
did not work.

Thanks again

Re: Win 98SE Boot problem

Recent NAV versions are heavily integrated throughout the registry for
"security" reasons. Unfotunately corruption can occur. Even if you can boot
into the regular desktop you may not be able to uninstall/reinstall NAV.
However it may be that NAV has totally hosed your Windows installation. This
is not uncommon with NAV, Symantec offers no support for this disaster, and
is why it is advisable to avoid NAV.
Sorry you had to learn the hard way.
If you can boot into safe mode and can back up your data files do so
immediately and then decide if you want to reformat your hard drive and
reinstall WIndows.

Re: Win 98SE Boot problem

Before reinstalling Windows in any manner, try removing and reinstalling
Norton. Run RegScrubXP (free) after the uninstall. If standard uninstall
doesn't work, use one of the removal tools supplied by Symantec. Of course,
still back up your data.

For 2004 and 2005 versions, use SymNRT.exe, found at:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...&osv=&osv_lvl=

For 2003 and older versions, use RNAV03.exe, found at:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT..._nam#_Section1

If neither tool works and it is the 2005 version, I have a registry patch
that removes all of the 2005 registry entries. Let me know and I will email
it to you.

If/when Norton is completely cleaned up, I would HIGHLY recommend never
installign it again; it's a piece of crap. So is McAfee. The onyl two I
recommend right now are AVG Free (free.grisoft.com) and Avast! Home
(requires registration; www.avast.com). I can't even begin to tell you how
many PCs got trashed because of Norton.
