program copy

Hi all, This may be the worng place to ask, but, I have two or three
programs that I have lost the disks. (long story) I may have to format my
computer and wonder if there is a way to make a disk of the programs. If I
backup files with an external hard drive will I be able to install programs
from that? Maybe dumb. But---
Thanks
