Error installing linux redhat 7.1

I'm installing RedHat Linux 7.1, and when I select a partition to install
on, when I enter the name for the root partition, I enter "/root", It keeps
saying an error or something. I don't really remember that. I just want to
know exactly what to do (Number the steps like 1. 2.)

-Travis

PS: I used PartitionMagic 8 Full

You have to be kidding,,,,,Why in the hell would you want to install a
distro even remotely that old. What are you trying to install it on ?
What size is the hard drive, did you do a bad block check ?

You can download Fedora 4 for free from the Red Hat website (or mirror
site). If you have a DVD-R burner, you can download the DVD image and put it
on a single disk. Fedora 4 will have the correct drivers for you PC devices
that RH 7 probably lacks.

The root partition is "/", not "/root".

Travis,

/root cannot be a mointpoint for any filesystem, because it is the
homedir for root.

root's homedir must be on the filesystem with mointpoint /

I would suggest the following mointpoints

/boot
/
/home
/var
/opt
/usr
/usr/local

Like others stated Fedora Core 4 is much newer, and supports more
hardware. Disadvantage of Fedora Core 4 could be, needs more disc space.

If you have a lot of discspace (20GB +) then let go of RH 7.1, RH 7.1
can contain to many security bugs that will not be fixed anymore.

Kind regards,

Jan Gerrit

Re: Error installing linux redhat 7.1

Don't use /root just use / it should work fine, though then you need a
/swap partition; if you are dual booting you can also change the
Windows partition(if you have one) to like /Win98
and it will see it up in X in midnight commander mnc
