| Mouse/Keyboard dont respond / USB problem. I reinstalled Windows XP in my Dell Pentium RT 4, the mouse and keyboard work ONLY if I connect them to (using) the two USB benind the PC. If I connect them using a converter (to be plugged there where you see a small icon with a keyboard and mouse on the back of the PC) they dont work at all. Any suggestion as how to solve this problem? Thanks in advance. Oswaldo |

| Re: Mouse/Keyboard dont respond / USB problem. If the keyboard and mouse work on USB but not PS2 then you atleast know they are working and can be detected. Try a different keyboard and mouse that do not require an adaptor and see if they work in the PS2 connector If they do it is your adaptor If they do not it is the connectors on the motherboard Take appropriate steps from there |

I think just use usb keyb/mouse. you may skip to the **** part of the post. because i misread your post. if you sesarch for ps2 to usb in the newsgroups i'm sure you'll find te answer (since i recall reading posts about it myself). Without the knowledge from googling. You would be suspecting either the ps2 dedvices or the ps2 to usb converter or the usb port on your comp. I can tell you that it won't work because the ps2 devices don't support usb. the answer is that ps2 keyboards don't naturally support USB (unless it's a special kind of ps2 keyb that does). (in contrast, USB devices do support ps2). There are 2 kinds of ps2 to usb adaptor. There are little ones with 1 ps2 socket on one end and one usb socket on the other. And there are beast like ones with 2 ps2 sockets on one end and one male usb cable on the other. The little ones don't addd anything. So your Ps2 keyb and mouse still won't work. (you can prove this 'cos if you have a usb keyb and mouse and use a usb-ps2 adaptor, Then the ps2 to usb it will work. THe big ones add stuff that allows your ps2 adaptors to go through usb. So, if you wanted your ps2 devices to work, you'd need a beast like adaptor. They're probably about $8. go to google images and type ps2 to usb and you'll see examples little ones like what you're probably using http://www.fmcsstore.com/store/files...ll/PS2-USB.JPG 'beast' ones (i just call them the beasts). since they're big, mine even had a floashing light, and they're detected in windows as a usb device, I think as a human interface device or something! btw, - not really related, but another usb issue, is if if usb keyb doesn't work properly at boot up, it's probbably a BIOS issue. But most comps nowadays have BIOSs that properly support USB. I'm sure you know that you can use a USB keyb and Mouse (and with a usb hub, you could get more usb ports if you're lacking). I think that's fairly obvious - what tto do if you're lacking a usb port etc. And the fact that you can use a usb keyb and mouse. So all I answer here is the issue at hand. *********** actually, reading your post again! You have USB keyb and Mouse and a usb-ps2 adaptor, and they're not working in your ps2 ports. Well that is not right. Either your USB keyb and mouse are bad or the ps2 sockets are bad or the adaptor is bad. You know the usb ports are ok 'cos usb keyb and mouse work in them. So you could test teh ps2 sockets with ps2 keyb and mouse. And try oher usb keybs and mouse to see if the one you have is bad. Regarding a possible ps2 issue (in your case, not affecting USB)- I've heard of a 5VSB / 5V SB problem(there is stuff on google). Easiest way to test if this is on the table as a possible problem is to have a Ps2 keyboard and try that in the ps2 socket. And use a ps2-usb adaptor wit hthe ps2 keyb , trtying it in the usb socket. And see if the lights flash. THat indicates that 5V SB is active. It may be that it's active on the ps2 and not on the USB. ANd if ps2 devices aren't working properly, it is probably a power supply issue, not supplying enough current on the purple 5V SB wire. In which case either change the psu or turn off 5V SB (i've always seen it as a jumper on the mobo, one for 5V SB on ps2, another for 5VSB on USB) but may be somewhere in the bios (also?). |

| Re: Mouse/Keyboard dont respond / USB problem. Hy James - thanks for your kind advise. The coming weekend I will be working on this issue. Will let you know any results. So far, I dont need the back USBs, so, I assume it can wait till Sunday. Kind regards, Oswaldo |
