Windows Shuts Down to Prevent Damage?

Lately my one year old Compaq Presario has shut down twice, displaying
a blue screen which says, "Windows shut down to prevent damage to your
computer..Bad_Pool_Caller etc. Also, now when I start the computer, I
get the message "Invalid Boot Ini. File ..booting from C:/windows. I
haven't added any hardware since a video card was added right after I
bought the computer, almost a year ago. Does anyone know the problem?

What OS,and did you install a program before this began?Do a
search for Windows shut down to prevent damage to your
computer.Bad_Pool_Caller.More than likely, you'll have to edit your
boot.ini file in DOS.If you are unable to do this yourself you might
have to reinstall the OS.Please post in correct OS NG.

Hi Curt.

All indications are an errant (video) driver. Whichever vid-card you
installed, try installing the latest appropriate driver from the
manufacturer. Likewise, it probably wouldn't hurt to visit MS's Update page,
with a focus on (optional) updates that might address the issue. Here's some
documentation which might apply:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q310527 ,
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;314492 ,
http://www.updatexp.com/stop-messages.html

Re: Windows Shuts Down to Prevent Damage?

I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings but your system is saying, "Back me
up now while you still can!"
Those screens indicate a severe problem with system emory, more likely
hardware than software.
If you have not changed video drivers the video driver is not the culprit.
A system file in Windows could have been corrupted. Reinstallation would
presumably fix this.

The hardware causes of these fatal errors are varied: power supply, hard
drive, memory sticks or motherboard memory controller.
Back up your data files now as if the problem is your hard drive it could
die suddenly and irreversibly.
Software diagnostic packages, like System Suite or Norton, are helpful but
not totally reliable. If it is a memory stick or controller problem the
software is not specific enough to identify the culprit. If you have more
than one memory stick try using the computer with one or the other and see
if it stabilizes.
Since you have a compaq your are in the world of proprietary power supplies,
motherboards and cases. I hope your warranty is still valid.

Re: Windows Shuts Down to Prevent Damage?

a lot of different reasons for this issue..

there is a program called memtest.. do a search on google, should be site
with same name.. download and create the bootable disk to at least test
memory issues before you dive into it any further..

heat issues, not cleaning the cpu cooler etc..
bad power supply, corrupting hard disk..
many things could account for such an issue..
in fact even a virus or a worm..

test memory..
scan the hard disk..
if you can access the bios and check the voltages or use a meter to read
from a spare molex plug.. yellow should be 12vdc and red should be 5vdc..
boot into safe mode and run virus scan..
many steps to take to find issue..
good luck..
