Mouse occasionally won't work

I have a Microsoft mouse that I plug into the back of my Dell. It uses an
adapter (green) to plug in. It always worked before, but not now. I've had
this computer for about 4 years. When I remove the adapter and plug it into
the usb slot in the front of the computer, it works. Why won't it work in
the back of the computer with the adapter? Is it the adaptor or something
else?
Thanks.
