fired my mainboard or cpu?

I'm pretty sure I fried 1 or the other. But I'd like more assurance
before I give it up as a lost cause.

My fan for my cpu has been getting noisier and noisier. So I decided to
pop it out and clean it up some to try and get some more life out of it
till I got my next check. It was filthy. But my cleaning did ALOT. Once
it was reassembled it was running alot more quietly and seemed to work
just fine.

Then yesterday I wake up and turn it on. I check the weather then went
outside and was drinking my coffee and reading a book, enjoying the
day. I come back in about 2 hours later and the computer is off and it
smells like something overheated. I cursed myself for leaving it on
un-attended. I knew better than to do that, but, since it was running
so well it had totally slipped my mind. I tried to power on and got
absolutely nothing. I waited several hours and tried again with no
result. I felt the cpu and it was now cool, and since it was later
still I tried again watching the powersupplies fan. It budged just a
hair then stopped when I hit the power switch.

Now to me that means I fires her. But I'm hoping and praying that that
is not the case. But I can see no other explanation. Does anyone have
an idea what it might be other than what I fear?

TIA

You may have been smelling the fan burning up and it's quite possible that
your BIOS has a Fan Off safety mechanism just in case the CPU fan does
quit. If the fan stops running it shuts the computer down. If the fan
won't run when you hit the On button it won't let the computer start. Fans
are cheap, replace it and try it again.
