well i don't recommend dell, for a few reasons, 2 of which i will tell:
1. they have horrible tech support
2. only the to most expensive towers have graphics cards so on the
others you can't play most 3d games like doom3 and halflife 2.
unless you absolutely have to have a pc, i would recommend a mac mini
and remember even though its 1.42 ghz its about as fast as my dad's 2.4
ghz athlon xp. hope i helped,

Re: Anyone here buy a Dell computer?

My mom bought a Dell recently, and is very satisfied, although she did feel
there was some "slight of hand" with the price (I don't recall exactly why).
She lives in another state, so I haven't seen the computer itself. She also
only uses it to play computer solitaire and send e-mail.

If you look at the customer reviews on sites like Epinions or Dealtime, Dell
has absolutely horrible customer satisfaction ratings. Uniform complaints
about total lack of customer support. By looking at all the complaints, many
seem to come from sales of non-computer stuff, like digital cameras or
camcorders. I think what Dell does well is sell low-end computers cheap,
delivered fast. That appears to be it. After that, you're on your own. If
that's what your willing to accept, Wal Mart has had better deals on budget
computer packages, but of course Wal Mart doesn't do computer service.
Merely my opinion based on what I've observed.

Good luck!
Max.

Re: Anyone here buy a Dell computer?

Here are my personal ratings based on Performance, Quality, Tech Support
and compatibility. 10 = Best, 0 = DO NOT BUY (even if free):

Micron ...................... 7.9 (inflexible and pricey)
Dell ........................... 7.6 (Indian Tech Support drops Rating)
Compaq (Servers) ...... 7.0
IBM ........................... 6.5
Gateway .................... 5.5
Acer .......................... 4.8
AOpen ....................... 4.8
Sony ......................... 3.9
HP/Compaq ............... 3.5
Tiny ............................3.4
EMachines ................. 3.0
NEC/Packard Bell ....... 2.0
Daewoo ..................... 0.2 (anything from them)

Shop/Custom built machines are impossible to give a general rating
because they are all different and vary daily, although it is here that
you find the ratings of 9's and 10's..

Tech Help visual ..the way it is

It to bad that Dell put a few bucks more profit into their decision to
shift their Tech help overseas.
It will eventually have a domino effect for lost business.

We own two Dells.

The first one ( a 2400) system had no need to utilize the Extended Warranty.
On recent purchase for my wife we went t for the 3000 system which is
supposed to be an upgrade to the 2400.

With the 2400 Dell supplied many, many CD's ..The 3000 has four.

As fate would have it the 3000 started acting up and we had to call Tech
service and ended up in India...

As result of this experience now know that buying the extended warranty was
a BIG Goof.

The URL at trhe end of this is factual...

Dell must have provided Manuals...I was on hold for hours when Tech asked me
to hold while he checked...From Tech's comments I concluded that he..They, I
talked to 3 different Tech's...with someone who is suppose to know more
about solving problems.

I purchased 3000 for Xmas present...As of this writing and three
calls..hours spent..the problems still exist.
Problems don't restricy use, but are frustrating...Appears that Hard drive
may falter...

Realize that a mkanuafctured product will have problems..I once served as a
QC Manager...but management should . if their interested in future growth,
cover for the percentage of oversights/malfunctions.

If You go with Dell...DON'T GET THE EXTENDED WARRANTY

Also..If you like to play games...DO NOT upgrade the Display to Digital if
you buy a 2400 or 3000 System, unless Dell guarantees that they have
installed a PCI card. We went for the Digital Flat Panel and can not use
unless I install a PCI Express card.

This is not meant as sour grapes against Dell. The engineering and design
is excellent Tech Service is the big problem

I have news for you ... all of Dell's warranty/tech support is in India,
not just extended and this is a trend all of the Manufacturers are going
to.
