formatting hard drive??

This is a bit convoluted, but bare with me:

I loaded copy of Windows XP onto a machine that had Windows 98 on it (after
fdisking the HD) but it was from a copy registered on my other computer, it
will not let me use that key # and keeps asking for activation.

So I bought an upgrade from a friend for a good price. Problem is that I
believe I need to reinstall Windows 98 back onto the computer in order to
upgrade to the new wIN xp.

Is this correct? What do I do to format the HD to accept the old Win 98 disk
I have?

Thanks

No, you don't need to re-install Win98 if you have a Win98 CD. If you
can boot from the XP Upgrade CD and there isn't a valid copy of Windows
on the hard drive, Setup will ask you to insert the Win98 CD for
ownership to be verified.

I have just finished doing the same thing. You need to have a boot disk
of windows 98.our XP must have been formatted in FAT 32.

Now go to your BIOS as you boot up, set your boot settings as 1) floppy
drive
2) cd rom 3) hard disk. Save the settings and reboot with your Boot
disk in the floppy drive. When you get the A:> promt, type FORMAT C:/
enter. This will erase everything on your hard drive. Reboot your
computer. When you get the prompt again, direct your computer to your
cd rom (with win 98) type setup and off you go. You should have no
problem. Good luck.
