Help with buying new computer.

I currently have a crappy Gateway 433 mhz intel celeron with 384 dimm ram.
That I brought 6 years ago. It's extremely slow. I can barely do simple
tasks with it. I have my eye on this computer:

&type=19&dept=3944&path=0%3A3944%3A3951%3A41937%3A 180998 I know it's not
the best out there but it's all I can afford and it's better than the one I
have now. But will I see a significant increase in performance? Maybe I
should just keep the crappy computer I have know and wait until I can get
more money...

X-No-Archive:Yes

Here are my personal ratings based on Performance, Quality, Tech Support
and compatibility. 10 = Best, 0 = DO NOT BUY (even if free):

Dell 7.9 (fails in Customer/tech support)
Micron 7.8 (inflexible and pricey)
IBM 6.5
Compaq 5.2
Gateway 5.0
Acer 4.9
Sony 4.2
AOpen 3.9
Tiny 3.5
EMachines 3.0
HP 2.9
NEC/Packard Bell 2.0
Daewoo 0.2 (anything from them)

Shop/Custom built machines are impossible to give a general rating
because they are all different and vary daily, although it is here that
you find the ratings of 9's and 10's..

Ok, thanks. I think I will wait until I find a job and buy a dell. It's
what I really wanted anyways.

Re: Help with buying new computer.

Think carefully before buying a dell. My experience with customer service
and support was terrible. I purchased an 8400 Dell and it became inoperable
after two days. I then spent more than 10 hours on the telephone with tech
support and customer service and the problem was never resolved. Finally,
after many attempts Dell agreed to send me a replacement computer. However,
when I checked on the arrival date - another two hour telephone hold - I
learned that Dell tech suport cancelled the order. It took many attempts to
get them to take back this piece of junk.

Dell has nice advertisements - but if anything goes wrong you can count on
spending hours with tech support and customer service in an attempt to
remedy the problem.
