| Computer keeps rebooting everytime something is plugged into usb ports For some odd reason when ever I plug anything into my usb ports , system reboots itself. I can occasionaly use my scanner, even then once its dont i have to unplug it right away or computer will self reboot. its even rebooted in the middle of loading windows up. I had previosly installed a USB 2 card and that worked great till old hd went bad. once i put a new hd in and got everything reinstalled and tried to install card, computer will lock up on the found hardware wizzard or wont even respond after a manual reboot. any ideas to fix this problem? |

| Re: Computer keeps rebooting everytime something is plugged into usb ports did you move any of the power cables (for cd/hd) when you put in the new HD? if you have one of them laying about it can short out when you plug in a USB cable, it's happened to me before, tape up the ends of all loose cables, but the idea of a card shorting out sounds more interesting (although less likely than just a cable touching the case) but maybe it's the card/port you plugged the USB card into like wally said "Wally" <wwelle@optonline.net> wrote in message news:gfQqd.78$x_1.50@fe11.lga... > Sounds like a short in the system > > how many ports do you have and does thsi happen to all of them? > > > "Tony-KC8EWU" <ttymes@sbcglobal.net> wrote in message > news:b36de948.0411231452.5cbd3c7e@posting.google.c om... > > For some odd reason when ever I plug anything into my usb ports , > > system reboots itself. It will lock if you put a new HDD in there and install a new card. Because the OS was installed on another computer, so it doesn't recognise any of the new HW, and it thinks it's still on the old computer, it gets confused and hangs. You have to reinstall the OS on that mobo. Maybe there's some way of reinstalling just the mobo linked parts of the OS. |

USB doesn't like to share an IRQ setting which may cause a constant reboot. You didn't say which operating system although I think it is M$ NT+ so I can't give you specifics on how to resolve the problem. But here are some MS knowledge-base articles that might help. XP: Q314068 2k: 252420. Goto Microsoft.com, "knowledge base" under support towards the bottom of the page, type in the article number or issue in search and go. Good luck. |
