Keyboard and mouse lock up

This problem was listed prior to the newsgroup housekeeping. After a few
minutes or maybe a couple hours my keyboard and mouse lockup and I have to
reboot. I have done all that was suggested turned off power management etc.
Both mouse and keyboard have PS2 connections. Maybe there is a software
conflict. I just finished runing all the Norton fix it routines.

Re: Keyboard and mouse lock up

Perhaps a heat issue. Check your cpu fan and heat sink.

Re: Keyboard and mouse lock up

Thanks, CPU fan working OK, also just installed a new power supply with 2
fans about a month ago, also blew all the dust out. I just noticed that if I
left the computer just displaying the desktop icons instead of the the
normal web page MSNBC the mouse and keyboard are OK, that is today, who
knows about tomorrow

Re: Keyboard and mouse lock up

You might want to check and see if it locks up if you leave it on any other
website. Maybe just that one is doing something that continually uses
memory.
Other than that, it's possible that the same amount of time you are on
everyday represents the same amount of surfing you are doing and you are
just uisng up all you resources. Check the bottom left hand corner of your
screen and list how many things are in that box. Most software wants to
install itself to automatically load when you install it. That means, that
even though _you_ didn't open and use it, it has already done it. So the
affect is that when many people start their computer, they are already close
to the end of their resources because of the software which wants to load
itself. If you find you have all kinds of things in that corner, like
Adaptec Cd burner, any program you recognize that you don't use everyday,
take it out. If you don't know what it is, LEAVE IT ALONE. The way you
do this is, click on START, then RUN, then type in msconfig, click OK.
When that opens, look in the start tab to find out what has decided to load
itself every time you boot up. Uncheck programs that you recognize and
don't need started every single day. Click APPLY and OK to save your
changes. Oh, and stay out of the other tabs, that's bad trouble to mess
with them.

CPU fan working OK isn't that relevant, since it only tests one
factor. Check the CPU temperature in the BIOS. That requires many
factors to be OK. It requires the pad/paste to be OK, the heatsink to
be installed OK, the heatsink the right heatsink.
That is the test. See if it keeps climbing and climbing beyond 55 or
up to 60. Leave it on for 2 hours, reset, go to the BIOS, check the
temperature.

it could be software.
If you think it's worth bothering to keep trying to diagnose it, then
try a b and c. Otherwise, skip straight to d.

a)Try a different browser.

b)Try formatting and reinstalling windows or
Try making the partition smaller (partition magic), creating a new
partition,
installing windows on that and seeing how that goes.

c)Try disconnecting from the internet - unplug the cable, and see if
it still crashes.

If all that fails, it may be the hard drive

d) Try a different hard drive, reinstall windows. if it still crashes,
then use a different browser, if it still crashes the disconnect from
the net. If it still crashes then it's probably the motherboard.
If it is a Ps2 problem, then change to a USB mouse and keyboard
(though those are more likely to have problems)
If a change of HDD and reinstalling everything and using a different
browser and disconnecting from the net don't stop it crashing, then
it's the motherboard, and it may be a cheap motherboard.

are you the op or have you seen the ops computer?
i'm just asking 'cos i'd like to know what symptoms bad memory can
have. I've never had that problem. The symptoms of bad memory that
i'm aware of - in windows - are blue screens of death mentioning
invalid memory references. I'd have thought the mouse and keyboard
would use their own memory registers - shouldn't touch RAM. Those
registers would be addressed like RAM, but wouldn't be RAM. If the
keyboard buffer is in RAM, then it'd only be in a few locations. So
i'd expect other problems, like blue screens of death.

Re: Keyboard and mouse lock up

I do get "Not Enough Memory to Run this Application" sometimes when I boot
up and the desk top appears, I simply reboot and all is well. However,
sometimes when the screen is showing the desktop and I try to execute
Explorer the mouse and keyboard lock up. I have done most of what was
suggested but change the hard drive. I assembled my computer 5 years ago
with just the items I required.
