Cannot open programs

After having problems trying to update my norton anti virus...I
suspected a virus preventing me from doing this....so I downloaded
some freeware from AOL...after getting rid of the virus...I was able
to update my anti virus and virus definitions...then I rebooted..after
windows opened up..a quick message popped up from norton saying "
sucessfully deleted ______ virus" (didn't catch WHAT virus) but
anyway...a message popped up from windows saying "Couldn't find
Setup.EXE"...so now none of my .EXE application'll open up.
So whats the deal with this "problem" AND can
this be fixed w/o taking it somewhere?
Thanking you in advance
Chris

Re: Cannot open programs

What operating system are you running?
Is it a possibility to do a system restore or do you have any backups that
you can restore?

There are a couple of viruses oot in the wild that cause this exact
behavior.

Re: Cannot open programs

1. Try booting in Safe mode and running a complete virus check.
2. Insert your original XP Cd and do a repair (be careful not to do an
install)
3. Hopefully you have a backup of your critical files because if the
above do not work, you may have to do a total reinstall.

You could - reinstall windows. For XP do a repair. That will replace
the EXE files.

But regarding setup.exe, that doesn't sound like a file that windows
needs in order to start up.
Do start..run..msconfig <ENTER>
and deselect stuff so they don't start up.
