| Will HP Proliant blow the IBM x235 out of the water in performance? Cross posted to: alt.computer, alt.computers, biz.marketplace.computers I am going to run a large SQL Server with 60 users... Any thoughts on these two servers? One vendor is pitching the IBM x235 server... and the other is pitching the HP Proliant ML570 G2... The one vendor says that the IBM Dual XEON 3.2 Processors, 8 Gig of Kingston RAM, and two 146.8 gig disks Raid 0 will do just fine... But the other vendor says that the HP Dual XEON 2.7 GHz Processors, (4 processor capable server) with 2 meg cache, 8 gig of HP RAM, (2) 36 gig drives for the OS Raid 0, and (5) 72.8 gig Raid 0+1 disks will blow the IBM out of the water with performance. The only difference I saw in redundancy is that the HP has a hot pluggable redundant cooling fan. Difference in price is only a few thousand... Is it worth it... and are the statement(s) true????? Your input is GREATLY appreciated. -- -Dennis ----------------------- You can use most any measure when you are speaking of success. You can measure it in a fancy home, expensive car or dress. Did you miss that the HP has RAID 0+1, meaning if a single drive dies you don't lose all the data? I call that redundancy. |

| Re: Will HP Proliant blow the IBM x235 out of the water in performance? No didn't miss that... Here is how it was explained to me: The IBM was config'd for Raid 0 (mirrored drives) meaning if a single drive dies you don't loose all the data... The 0+1 in the HP means there are mirrored drives and 1 warm spare as well as an on-line ready to pick up the mirror if one drive dies... sort of a back-up to the back-up... -Dennis "Jim Berwick" <jimb@snip.net> wrote in message news:Xns957C7B93E3E18jimbsnipnet@207.103.26.26... > "Dennis" <tylersoldman********.com> wrote in > news:cli9d.4100$Ae.1958@newsread1.dllstx09.us.to.v erio.net: > > > The only difference I saw in redundancy is that the HP has a hot > > pluggable redundant cooling fan. > > Did you miss that the HP has RAID 0+1, meaning if a single drive dies you > don't lose all the data? | Re: Will HP Proliant blow the IBM x235 out of the water in performance? How I really should have stated it was... The IBM and the HP both offer redundancy... (power supply disk drive raid dual network path etc...) However, the HP allows for a redundant cooling fan but the IBM does not. RAID0 is striping. Two drives that look like one drive of 2x the size to the OS. No redundency. Lose one drive, lose all the data. RAID1 is Mirroring, as in, two disks with identical information. Lose one, the other still works. RAID 0+1 is striping (two drives) + mirroring (an entire second two drive set). One stripe mirrors the other stripe. If one drive fails, that stripe is toast, but the other stripe (since it is mirrored) is still good. Depending on what hardware and software, you could technically lose opposite drives on opposite stripes and still be OK. The IBM drive offers ZERO/!/ redundency on your disk drives. If the salesmen is telling you different, either he doesn't understand the difference between RAID 0 and RAID 1 (and is using the wrong term), or he is flat out lying to you to make the sale. Either way, don't listen to him. |
