Archiving of e-mail

In office environments people are encouraged to archive e-mail to
remove data from the centralized servers and put it on the local pc
hard drive. Does it make sense to archive e-mail on a home computer
where all the files are on the pc hard drive anyway? What are the
benefits? Thanks
