Linux Dual Boot

I have been wanting to install Linux on one of my computers and leave
Windows XP on it as well. I have not done this already for 2 reasons.

1) I am afaird that I will mess up and loose all of the data on my hard
drive.

2) I don't know where I can get a free relizable version of Linux

So I was wondering does anyone now of a trusted website that will give
me instructions on how to create dual boot with Windows XP and Linux.
Also a site where I can get a free versino of Linux. Do you think this
is a good idea to do it will dual boot or not? Advise and recomnedation
would be helpful.
Thank You in advance for any help you can provide.
