a very silly question

i took a 10 year hiatus and they invented the mouse and the internet,
now i don't understand all kinds of simple stuff. can anyone explain
why smaller programs, you click and run but heavy stuff you must
install first? is "install" some kind of self-decompression before you
can run a program? i don't program anymore and i quit with dos word
processing tasks in 92. hence my "basics" ignorance.

Re: a very silly question

Yes Install is to put the Program on your HDD, much like DOS was on your
HDD.
And the Internet has been around longer than ten years, but be that as it
may, you are correct in the assumption of Installing.

Re: a very silly question

In the old days, a program is all the stuff. Now, a program is depended on
other programs to do the jobs, such as a complier to decode the program,
MDAC(Microsoft Data Access Component ) to access data from other programs,
DLL(Dynamic Link Library) to use the function to perform other task. That
mean, as a programmer, you don't have to write all the stuff, there are
already something you can use in your program. Therefore, the program is
small but you have to install a lot of other stuffs.
