Printer Cleaning Problem

I sincerely hope that folks more knowledgeable about computers than I
can shed a little light on this problem...

I'm still using the HP Deskjet 600C printer I've had since 1999. Lately,
it's
been streaking quite a bit, indicating it requires a cleaning. So, I went
and
purchased the HP Cleaning Kit, which contained a CD-ROM disc and 5 sheets
of special cleaning paper.

When I insert the disc, I've been able to follow the screens up to a point.
However, when I get to the menu where I indicate the printer model I'm
using and the port where it's connected (LPT1), I receive an error message
telling me it cannot detect the printer and to select a different port.

It's definately hooked up to LPT1. I have had no problems printing out a
page.
However, I cannot run this cleaner because it refuses to acknowlege the
printer's existence.

I've gone to the HP website and checked to see if I needed an updated
driver.
I'm told that what I'm using is the latest.

Where am I missing the boat? Many thanks in advance to anyone who can
help out in this mission.

Re: Printer Cleaning Problem

Go into your BIOS and change the LPT1 setting to one of the 2 way
communication options.

Re: Printer Cleaning Problem

Many thanks for your response, Wizard. Ummm ... how do I go about
doing what you suggest? (I'm really not all that computer literate).

Re: Printer Cleaning Problem

Reboot your machine and when it first starts to boot keep hitting the
"Del" key or sometimes "F2" keys what ever it says is the way in to the
BIOS setup. It will be obvious once you are in there. Then look far a
section call perifherals or some such. What you are looking for are the
I/O ports com & lpt will be together some where. When you find LPT 1
then toggle it's setting to "ecp" or "bydirectional" if you can find it.
I always use ECP.
save your changes and reboot. Windows should see the change you made and
correct accordingly. Then see if you printer problems are gone.
