lost HDD space

It weirded me out a little when after formatting a 40 gig (39
something) Western Digital HDD I have in my computer it lost about 6
gigs of space and now only reads that it is a 33.01 gig drive. I have
formatted, reformatted, written zeros to the entire drive and used
western digitals' own formatting tools to no avail. Thinking that
there was an unmounted partition I tried windows formatting utilitys,
dos, partition manager, FDISK and writing zeros again but nothing
works! Has anyone had similar problems, or know how I can get my space
back?
