| Mae and CD-Rom is back Frank and Mikey--------? <grin> I posted a bit back about a friend whose CD-ROM would play music (external disks) yet wouldn't install programs. I finally got over my ferocious cold and went to see her and what was up. She also has a DVD drive (E) installed some time ago. Last advice here, when I asked about disconnecting the Cd-Rom drive had two replies--if music plays it isn't the drivers, so when disconnecting and reconnecting didn't work, I tried to uninstall the Drive through the Device Manager. That froze her machine. Okay so she has D drive for CD-Rom and E Drive is her DVD. When I had her D drive disconnected, I experimented and put and installation disk in the "E" drive--whooppee !!! Her lastest program installed. She is happy. However the one she had mentioned before, we tried and it wouldn't work in "E" so I reconnected the "D" drive. and tried it there. D drive is not recognized. I brought her disks home and the work in my CD-Rom and I have no DVD. Her Cd-Rom Drive , D, has 3 connections, a tiny round cord, that I had never seen before (connects rather like a phone jack?) the" ribbon" connection and the other power connection. Any advice from my many admirers ?????????????????? Thanks Mae |

| Re: Mae and CD-Rom is back We understand that...... Werent ignoreing you, just a lack of info there as to your question... Particulars would be helpful. The cables you list are standard, (the tiny round cord is a audio input to the soundcard from the CD-ROM, this allows data (analog or digital, I cant remember) to be sent directly to any additional PCI/(or ISA depending on age) sound card, so that the sound isn't processed through any onboard soundcard you might have. (Or at least this is what it sounds like on your description of it.) This may or may not be connected depending on whether or not they have an add-on sound card. The flat cable is Standerd IDE Interface. And of course the power connection. But as for your question of why it isnt installing programs, but is playing music, that could be more advanced; having to do with incorrect driver installation, (are you sure you have the right make and model when installing?) the IDE ribbon might be damaged, any number of things could have gone wrong. I wouldn't rule out that the lazer is damaged, being as the installation disks worked in your CD-ROM, but not in hers. I would try swaping CD_ROM drives and see if the drive does NOT work in your computer, that would definatly rule out the lazer/bad drive all together. I hope this helped, and if I am wrong on any of this maybe another usernet tech could correct me. (its been a while for me) If you do find out what is wrong or have more info on the problem, please post again.
