Unusual problem

Dear Computer Experts
Several years ago I created several documents in Word/Excel 97. I
upgraded the operating system from Windows 95 to XP (reinstalling the same
programs). Now when I try and open the docs using the correct password, I
get the message "Can not convert password protected document". Anyone
else run into this situation and successfully resolve it?
Cordially
