CD-ROM drive not installing programs

a friend of mine-- I haven't looked at her computer yet--can play music
from the D drive but cannot install a program--error message reads that
it isn't there.

Do I take it off----then restart and let the computer find it?

If so how do I disconnect the D drive--and what do I do in which order?

Help will be appreciated

computer

Re: CD-ROM drive not installing programs

Mae, what is the operating system that your computer friend is using? WIN95,
98, 98SE, ME, etc. I had this problem with WIN95 and there was a "over
write" in the windows registry caused by a virus. Had to re-install WIN95
and this corrected the "missing" CD drive when installing or reading data.
So the CD drive is operational and it's seen in the OS. That's it and hope
this helps.

Re: CD-ROM drive not installing programs

Thanks for the reply, Carlis

She has Win 98. She is Norton protected.

Are you saying I might have to re-install Win 98 on her system--?

What about the previous answer about disconnecting then reconnecting the CD-Rom
drive. I can do that too.

Re: CD-ROM drive not installing programs

Well Mae reinstalling the operating system is one of the options here.
Frank's idea of removing the drive can help but if your ONLY issues are
accessing data or installing programs from the CD-ROM drive and the drive is
"not ready" or can't read the data other then music the real problem is with
a file in the operating system. So you can try Frank's suggestion but I
think that this will not solve the problem with the drive. Updating WIN98
will help and could correct CD data access but the issues with Microsoft
operating systems are normally resolved by a clean installation when the
operating system doesn't respond. I don't personally like to try to fix
operating system malfunctions. I re-install ONLY when I can't get Windows to
run right. That's it...

Re: CD-ROM drive not installing programs

Also if that doesnt work you can try a system restore from when the cdrom
worked with installing software if you installed anythink since when it was
working it will still be there it will just fix anythink changed in the
registry and so forth but if all else fails such as the restore and or the
unhooking and rehooking the cdrom the reinstall would be your last choice I
personally dont like to reinstall just becuase you will loss all of you data
