Is there any s/w that would give you instantanoeus & average internet
transfer rate? I am sometime curious as to how fast is my high-speed
internet really is. I know there are sites that would give me d/l speed
during file d/l, but not when browsing pages.

I don't think there is. www.dslreports.com gives download and upload
speeds, or you could use an FTP (cute ftp tells you your download speed)
program to give you a better download average.
