| Sharing Lexmark x85 printer on a p-p network using win2000(server) and win98(client) I am trying to share a Lexmark x85 from a win 2000 system to a win 98 system across the network. I am able to install it, but when I attempt to print from it, it just gives an error that says that communications with the printer have failed. I can choose to retry or cancel. Retry always fails. I noticed that on the server side (win 2000) that the printer driver is not installed for win 98 under the "additional drivers" option. I go into that option and select "win 95/ win 98" and it asks for the drivers from my win2000 cd. I'm a little confused about this, since the drivers that I'm complimenting the ones already on the system are win 98 drivers. So, if anyone knows... Do I really need to have the win 2000 cd to do this or can I get the driver installed elsewhere? I have tried downloading the win98 driver from Lexmark, but it won't work either. I have the cd for the x85 and have installed it on the win98 client, but that doesn't change anything. I still get the same error. It all points back to that "additional drivers" box where I have to select which operating system I want it to be compatible with. Any suggestions? Matt |

| Re: Sharing Lexmark x85 printer on a p-p network using win2000(server) and win98(client) Matt, We have this issue all the time. The problem you have is that you are setting up a print server, not just a local printer. Part of the print service on the W2K box is making files available to other OS's that are going to print to it. This includes UNIX, all flavors of Windows and even Macs. So, you need to have the W2K disk in order for it to install those drivers into the service so connecting machines can use it. To answer your question directly, I don't know if Lexmark will have the drivers you are looking for. They might have W98 drivers avaialable, but those _may_ not be the ones that W2K needs to package for download. The best thing is to scrounge a W2K Server disk (any old W2K disk _may_ work) and try that. | Re: Sharing Lexmark x85 printer on a p-p network using win2000(server) and win98(client) Yeah, I tried that... but that didn't work. I also tried to pull the platform driver for w2k from a w2k server disc I have, but I keep getting errors that simply state, "Error, the driver could not be installed" (or pretty close to that) On another note, I found that I had an old driver for the x83 installed, but I'm working with a lexmark x85. I have removed it, but haven't tried to go through the process yet again. Every I attempt to install the platform driver on the w2k host, I get that error and it seems to corrupt the installation and I have to reinstall the original driver all over again. But like I said, I haven't tried all of this since I removed that old x83 driver I found on the system. I'll try again soon and let everyone know what the outcome is. thanks again, Matt "Wizard" <no@stinking.ads.com> wrote in message news:40266613.1F66A1D0@stinking.ads.com... > Just install the correct drivers locally on the 98 machine. > > Matt McCarty wrote: > > > > Thanks for the quick reply. It seems easier for me to enable simple tcp/ip print services on the 2000/xp machine or print services for unix to make the pc act more like and lpr print server or tcp/ip print server. It seems to work well. may help if it isn't really a driver problem. go to "add remove programs" in control panel under windows components/networking services & other network file and print services. good luck |
