| RAM upgrade and potential problems I have a question: what kind of trouble can you get into if you're upgrading RAM? And let's say you've picked out the compatible stick. This is why I'm asking: I have a compaq 5-series, a couple of years old, with a pentium 3 and 128mb of RAM. I added another 256 for PC100 (same type as the old, 128- stick) and the system recognized it. For a little while, all seemed well, I had a total of 128+256=384mb, and then all hell broke loose. Computer was crashing like crazy, won't boot up any more, and says there are bad sectors on the hard drive (5gig out of 20 total is now bad - new development, never had HD problems before.) A friend told me that the thing to do is to DOUBLE the memory any time you add sticks. But I once added 32mb to the existing 64 on my old computer and it worked great, just great. Any comments, suggestions, etc.? |
