How to re-enable directdraw acceleration?

I was playing a game that would crash during movie clips. The game's
instructions said to disable directdraw acceleration, which I did. It
solved one problem, but now the game runs too slowly. How do I
re-establish directdraw acceleration? There is no button on the
directx 8 setup screen that allows me to do this.
